A Hasty Grave

Title: A Hasty Grave

By Jessie McAlan

GENRE: Amateur sleuth

SPECIAL NOTE: The book is on sale for $0.99.

Finding a large hole on one’s property is one thing; finding a body in it the following day is quite another.

Rona and her ex-husband, Johnny, also discover a sheet of paper at the gravesite, symbols looking like code or treasure hunting glyphs. What’s it mean? Does it have any bearing on the man’s death?

Add to this mix the old Finley-Tennet feud and an elderly Finley’s nebulous recollection of James/Younger outlaw days. Does she have the clue to the cache’s location?

When a second death pushes Rona and Johnny into a deadly game of hide-and-seek with the killer, she learns—nearly too late–just how deeply Johnny still loves her.

She’d set her laptop on the coffee table and was getting out dessert plates and mugs when the bell to the side door rang. She cracked open the window, saw it was Johnny, then ushered him inside.

“First time in quite a while I’ve been given the eye.” He gave her a light kiss on the cheek. “Wouldn’t a peep hole in the door work better?”

“I just wanted to be certain it was you. Can you install a peep hole?”

“Nothing to it, especially for a man who’s put in those picture windows in his shop.” He flung his cap onto the kitchen table and shrugged out of his jacket. “Why the precautions all of a sudden?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’m not busy the rest of my life. Except for October 28th. I’ll be occupied with the gallery’s opening that day. But the other ten thousand nine hundred fifty days are yours.”

“How long is that?

“Thirty years, give or take a leap day or two. I want to make sure I’m not skimping on our time together.”

“You plan on living to one hundred seven?”

“I don’t see why not. I have to make up for our year of separation and divorce.” He dished two servings of the pudding cake into the bowls, set them and the mugs on the tray, and took them into the den. “So, what’s this long story that requires precautions? I love stories. I was brought up on stories.”

“This isn’t Little Red Riding Hood. Sorry to disappoint you.”

“So it’s something else with a big bad wolf.”

Review by Emily: I’m giving A Hasty Grave four (4) stars. The greatest part of this book is the character development and the strength and authenticity of Rona, the main character. She’s definitely not a TSTL (Too Stupid To Live). Rona reacts to threats in different ways and all of these are honest and perfectly fit her character. The secondary characters are equally as well-developed.

The dialogue is great. I hate to use the word “authentic” again but it’s the only word that fits here. It’s a joy to read.

The setting is enjoyable—a small town on the banks of the Mississippi. It’s definitely a unique place to hold a murder mystery.

I also like the red herrings. LOL, ‘nough said. (They really make the book more entertaining.)

Unfortunately, I had two problems with the narrative. The first is minor. The author tends to head-hop, briefly delving into another character’s point of view even though the book is obviously in Rona’s point of view. This is only a small distraction.

The second problem is more challenging to get around, and that’s pacing. This book stops and starts, offering brief jolts of action followed by long expository passages.

These two things aside, if you like hints at romance, well-developed characters, and a gradual but progressive plot, you will like A Hasty Grave.

Bark Twice for Danger

Title: Bark Twice for Danger
Author: M.K. Scott
Genre: Cozy Mystery

Blurb: Comic Con is in full-swing and all is well. But no sooner does the biggest event of the year begin before a mysterious wave of identify thefts overshadows the grand affair.

While Nala tries to rein in Karly’s efforts to use the con for dating purposes, she also finds herself the target of a brazen thief. If she and her crime-solving canine companion don’t find the culprit, her bank accounts could be wiped cleaned.

Can Nala and Max bring an end to the chaos before it’s too late?

The author is running a Rafflecopter on her blog for a $50 gift card… the contest is open until July 1. Please mention that on your post… here’s the link on her page to the giveaway:

Here’s the Rafflecopter link for the extra giveaway:

Excerpt: Max’s nose dropped, and his lips went up in a doggy grin. “I have, but not recently. I was trying to remember how to bring my A game. It’s something about getting a girl to think you’re better than you are. Should we lie about how many cases we actually solved?”

It didn’t take a psychic to know her pooch had been listening to Elvin bragging to one of his guy friends. If that was a man’s definition of having an A game, Elvin so didn’t have it. Women recognized him as a hopeless geek seconds after meeting him. If they gave him a second thought, it was usually to set up their smart television or fix their laptop, which he could.

“That’s not what I meant. Sure, we want to look our best, but there is no reason to lie.” The two of them meandered back to building three, stepping over patches of hard packed dirt with a few sprigs of grass in it. Despite its current circumstances, the grass was making a valiant effort to survive, as possibly were some of the residents. The entire place had the feel of a temporary stop. Her mother would point out that was the whole purpose behind apartments. In her world, people who lived in shabby apartments did not need design services.

As they reached the correct apartment building, she’d counted the number of cases she’d solved, which was almost all of them. There was one date profile she’d looked up for a nervous dater, but by the time she’d discovered he had a habit of romancing wealthy women, her client refused to listen. The dossier still sat on her office desk. Her mother suggested mailing it in about three weeks before the woman lost everything.

Review: I am going to give this book 4.5 stars. The character development was wonderful, I felt like I’ve knew them my whole life by the end. It’s a fun and witty story with a plot as twisty as a knot.

Nala gets a call from a new client who finds out that her credit information has been stolen, not only that but someone had entered her apartment and took the hard copy of all her credit information. Nala starts to help her go through the steps to make sure that her credit doesn’t suffer while she and Max start investigating. Nala doesn’t have many leads when she gets a call from her mom stating that her company card had charges that were not purchased by her.
She asked Nala took look into it and then cancel the card.

To make things worse, Nala’s office has been broken into twice. The first time nothing had been moved but the second time her desk had been move to expose a hidden spot. Nothing is left in there either, and the police can’t help her out as there was nothing forensically available. To make her life even more complicated, her neighbor that shared the same office building has also been a victim of identity theft The thieve had tried to order all the costume of the Avengers, for the Comic Con that is going to start soon.

With Max at her side, providing her his own opinions (weather asked or not) and wanting hamburgers for his services. They decide to go to Comic Con to see if they can find one person. Nala had decided to have her best friend Elvin, to check her own credit. To her horror her information was also compromised. They were able to track one charge to a restaurant where a waiter had provided a description of the person who picked up the order. With a description and knowing that it was likely they are going to comic con, Nyla helps Harry (her neighbor who had also suffered fraud (to see if they can find him. To everyone’s surprise Harry chases the culprits.

This did not solve every case; her mother’s information had not been on the list of the hackers had. Her mother did say her newest employee may be the ones stealing information. Things end up getting dangerous when Nala’s mother confronts her employee. It turns out that it’s a good thing Nala is a good shot and that Max knows when to lend a paw.

There is one thing that I think would have made the book perfect. The author does tend to spend a little too much time with details and it can be a little difficult figuring whose case is whose.

If you love talking dogs, witty and smart heroines and sweet romance this is a book for you.

Asta and the Barbarians

Title: Asta and the Barbarians
By: Becca Fox
Genre: Fantasy

Asta heard about King Torvald’s crusade and watched her people fortify the town’s defenses, but she never imagined foreign invaders would come to her peaceful shores. In one fateful night, she loses everything she holds dear and somehow gains the favor of the warrior god. Has he given her the tools she needs for revenge or does he have a greater plan in store?

“Why did you help me?” I asked. “I have nothing to give in return. You must have known that.”

Bryn smiled softly. “A very wise woman once said, ‘A world without kindness is a dark and hopeless place.’ And that isn’t the kind of world I wish to live in.”

My eyes stung with the coming of new tears.

Viggo rolled his eyes and turned to leave. “I’ll see you at dinner, Bryn.”

“Until then,” Bryn said over his shoulder. His glowing eyes fell on my face again. “What’s your name?”

“I would like to hear your story, if you are willing and able to tell it, Asta.”

I rubbed my face against the blanket. “You won’t like it.”

“We are rarely fond of the truth,” Bryn said with a shrug. “Tell me anyway.”

Review: I am going to give this novel 5 stars. We are drawn into a richly developed world where oppression reigns and people with special powers trained to carry out orders of the General Who is going behind his King’s back and reporting false reports of his diplomats. The king and the whole country believes the much-needed resources that are coming to the Island are being delivered via negotiation. Instead the General is stealing these goods.

We meet one of my favorite characters, Asta, whom has seen her family and village destroyed in front of her eyes. She can’t quite figure why the General saved her life but she’s not grateful.

Then when they dock on the main Island, she is taken directly to an Academy who trains those that are God’s Anointed (people who have glowing copper eyes and heightened senses). Life isn’t easy for her there. She is the only woman that has ever received the God’s gift and receive no support from her comrades.

Then Bryn walks into her life, finding her crying and suicidal. And wherever Bryn is Vico is sure to follow. He tasks Vico to look after Asta while still in the Academy, while he escapes.

These three people developed into an extremely tight family. They are there for thick and thin, and are horrified to find out what the General has done to Asta to wish to kill him.

She is also surprised to find out how much she likes the King, then figured out that he did not have a clue about the horrors happening in the continent. What When she informs the King what is happening, he sets plan into motion that will hopefully save the relationship.
The main plot of the book is that council men around the king are being killed, and there have been several assassinations attempts on the King, all foiled thanks to his bodyguard, who is Asta. Veco, Bryn and she must carefully dig through the private life of the Highborn.

A great read for those summer nights to get away from the world an d jump into a whole new one.

Joan the Made

Title: Joan the Made
By: Kristen Pham
Genre: YA science Fiction

On Joan Fasces’ eighteenth birthday, she discovers that she is cloned from the famous Joan of Arc. But being cloned in America comes at a steep price. Segregated and oppressed, clones are forced to act as docile servants to the rest of the Evolved population.

Joan can either run from her fate and spend the rest of her life in hiding, or she can join a Throwback rebellion populated by clones of the greatest leaders in history.

Whenever there’s an unjust rule, I always itch to break it. In general, I try to quash that impulse, since it rarely leads to anything but trouble. But tonight, I decide to give in to my restless desire for freedom, even if it means sneaking out past curfew.

Creeping out of my house, I breathe in the fresh night air. The neatly painted shed beside our house is locked, keyed to Dad’s fingerprint, but I figured out how to hack that ancient technology ages ago.

Inside the small space, a black motorcycle gleams, waiting for me to pull it out of hiding, like Excalibur waiting for King Arthur. Taking it isn’t really stealing, since it’s a birthday present, and I turn eighteen at midnight.

I roll my motorcycle down the street for a block before revving it up. Dad’s been teaching me how to drive manual, but it’s tricky after a lifetime as a passive passenger in our autonomous car.

If life were a movie, the soundtrack to mine would start with the soft crunch of asphalt under my bike’s wheels and the rev of an engine roaring to life. Racing across the open road, free, I’m unstoppable. There are a thousand places I could go and hours till dawn.

If I’m going to pull an all-nighter, I’ll need to be caffeinated. My favorite coffee shop is three miles away, and I keep an eye out for the police, since it’s against the law for an underage teen to drive a manual vehicle.

My motorcycle skids to a stop a millimeter from the side of the coffee shop, and I get off. Released from my black helmet, my long, dark brown hair tumbles down my back, making me feel like a total badass biker girl.

I am going to give this novel 5 stars. If you are a fan of the Hunger Games, and Divergent series, you will adore this book. The major difference between Joan the Made and those other books is the fact that in Joan the Made there are clones running around everywhere. A large company controls the birth of clones, they don’t want to have too many Marylin Monroes around. Joan is different because her “type” has only been used for cloning once. It turns out that was because the clones are starting a civil war. They wish for the same rights that non-clones have. They believe that Joan can help lead the revolution, as her namesake did for the English. So, she is sent to become part of the artistic class. Here they can pass messages, gather support, and set the revolution right under the non-clones.

This book is exciting from start to finish. Try it! As an extra bonus, I love this title.

Unbreakable Bond

Title: Unbreakable Bond
By: Jess Bryant
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Blurb: Sometimes fate gets it all wrong.

Zoey Kent has lived with that fact ever since she turned eighteen and learned that the man she loved could never be hers. He’s a born shifter, a wolf, and she’s a mere human. Fate doesn’t care if on paper they’re a perfect pair. She isn’t his fated mate and she’s resigned herself to the knowledge that someday, she’ll have to watch Michael mate with another. It’s never crossed her mind that there might be someone else out there for her, that she would be the one to mate another, to choose another over everything she’s ever known or wanted.

Sometimes fate gets it all right.

Rafe Hudson left his pack behind years ago. Physically and mentally scarred from an attack that left his parents and twin dead, he walked away from his responsibilities as Alpha. He never intended to return but lone wolf or not, he can’t leave Michael open to an attack he’s learned is coming for his only brother. What he didn’t know was that going home would mean scenting his mate, the one person in the world that could make him whole again, that could give him everything he thought he’d lost. His pack, his home and his family.

But fate always has a plan.

There’s no way Michael’s brother is her future, is there? Just like there’s no way that the girl his brother has loved since they were kids, was always meant to be his, right?

Only fate knows why they were brought together but there is one thing for sure, the sparks between Zoey and Rafe are undeniable. The bond between them is unbreakable. And together… they’ll change the face of the pack forever.

Excerpt: Rafe Hudson was going to rip his little brother’s intestines out and use them to choke him to death. It was a fantasy he’d been living over and over in his head for the past few hours. It was a fantasy that he would have fulfilled already if only she hadn’t stopped him.

Her. Zoey. His mate. He was still trying to wrap his head around how that was even possible.

All of those years out there in the big, bad world. All of his time spent roaming from city to town to countryside. He hadn’t been out there looking for her but he was what he was. He was a shifter and it was hard coded in him to seek the woman that was meant to make him whole. In the back of his mind, every time he encountered a new woman, a new wolf or other shifter, he’d wondered if she was the one.

He’d wondered if he would find her at his next stop or the one after that. He’d wondered where she was and if she was looking for him too. And, in his darkest moments, he’d wondered if fate had even seen fit to give him a mate when he’d already failed to protect those that meant the most to him once.

He’d failed his family, his entire pack. He had been the one to run past the boundary line. He was the one the hunters had followed back to camp. He was the reason they were all dead, every one of them.

His proud father, the leader of them all. His mother, the sweetest wolf to have ever been born. And Gabe, his littermate, his twin, his other half in every way. The only member of his family that hadn’t been in the woods that day was Michael and because fate liked to throw punches when you were already down, Rafe knew that the reason his little brother hadn’t been there was because he’d been with her.

To find out, after all of this time, that she was his? That she’d been his all along? That she was h but that she’d been here with his brother? Well, that was an injustice he wouldn’t, and couldn’t, tolerate.

Review: I am going to give 4.5 stars for this fun novel. It was interesting how the relationship between Zoey, Michael, and Raf was handled. Michaels overprotectiveness puts a large strain on Zoey’s relationship with Raf. Raf and Zoey know they’re mates as soon as they meet each other. The hardest thing that Zoey faced was realizing that her relationship with
Michael was not meant to be, as they both imagined when they were younger.

Rafe has a lot of problems to solve and Zoey is by his side for them all. He saw most of his family slaughtered in front of him, he blames himself for that. He couldn’t deal with what happened so he ran off, not letting his wolf out as he thought it was feral and would hurt anyone he came across. Then Zoey comes along, his second half, his everything and she slowly helps him cope.

The book is more character driven then plot driven. Although is a hint of a problem that is going to be addressed in the next book.

This is a wonderful book to pass a summer day reading. Full of romance and hurt.

Off Season

Title: Off Season: A Novel of Healing
Author: E.S. Ruete
Genre: Fiction

Dottie woke up wondering where she was and why she was so cold. The first thing she noticed was that she must be outside – she was lying on cold ground and snow was hitting her in unusual places. That’s when she noticed the second thing. Her skirt was pulled up past her waist and her panties were gone. Damn those bastards. It started to come back to her.

Dottie is now on an odyssey; a journey not of her choosing; a journey of healing, integration, and reconciliation that will involve her partner, her friends, her enemies, her church, her whole community. And her rapists. As she fights her way through social stereotypes about rape and rape victims, she also finds the strength to overcome society’s messages of who she should be and lays claim her true self. But the memories, the loss, the anger – and the fears – never go away. No woman chooses to be raped. I asked Dottie why she chose to tell me a story of rape. She said that millions of women, hundreds every day, have stories of rape that never get told. She told her story because she could. Because she had to. Because maybe people would hear in a work of fiction a Truth that they could not hear in any other way.

(The font of the following excerpt is to indicate that the character is having a flashback.)

“This is bullshit.”

“Now Sheri, we don’t use that language here.”

“The hell we don’t. ‘Bullshit’ is a lot less dangerous than the language you’re using. Telling me that it was my fault, that I wanted it, that I probably enjoyed it. You weren’t there. You didn’t have some … jock sitting on your belly holding your nose while he poured liquor down your throat. … You didn’t get raped. And raped and raped and raped. ”

“Now Sheri, talk like that doesn’t help anyone.”

“It helps me.”

“No, it doesn’t. You’re fixating again. To recover …”

“Recovery, hell…The girl was raped. Rape is not an issue. It’s not an obsession or compulsion or neurosis you recover from. It’s not an addiction that you are in recovery from. It’s not something you own, it’s something that owns you. It’s a violation. It’s a big gaping wound. If you’re lucky you survive it and it heals over, but it leaves a scar that is always there. You don’t recover from it. You don’t even get to the place where you say you’re in recovery. You just is. ‘Raped’ is a part of you the rest of your life. But you wouldn’t know about that, you tight-assed little white male f…”

Review: I am going to give this book four (4) stars. It is a wonderful book and offers a lot of support for those that have gone through the same thing (rape). Or maybe their experience was different but they can all relate to the struggle Dottie goes through. The one thing that bothered me the most was the fact that the story switched between points of view a lot. I had a hard time figuring out who was talking when. This really detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

The plot doesn’t shy away from any tales of Dottie’s rape and what happens afterward. It shows how hard it is for someone to deal with emotions alone, and even the people who are closest to you can actually make things worse. We also learn that we do not know everything about everyone. There are secrets in every family and some of those secrets can help you. Dottie develops the best support network she could have hoped for. But there is one area that is still holding out on her: her church. One member of the church actively works against LGBTQ people, and Dottie is a lesbian. This woman believes only in the Bible and the protocols of the Mormon Church. With the help of her friends, her church, and a counselor who has also been raped, Dottie finally starts to recover, leaving the reader with a sense of hope.

Genre: Science Fiction/Apocalyptic

Blurb: “Players. Welcome to the apocalypse”

Book One – Pandora:

Book Two – CyberNexis:
When rescue finally arrives, the players are transported to an offsite facility to recover from cyber sickness. Not all the players survived and not all is what it seems. What is CyberNexis hiding out in the desert?

Book Three – Primal Scream:
The disaster known as The Event has plunged the world into icy darkness. Humans can’t survive but a group of mutants can. All signs lead back to the simulation pods. What were they really designed for?

Join these characters on an emotional and fast-paced journey to explore what it really means to survive.

Exerpt: “Player twenty-one is about to enter the game.”

Orange atoms flashed in front of Jack Minnow’s eyes and he felt the lurch of his stomach as if plummeting from a great height, and he thought to himself, I didn’t choose a game.

These atoms flashed, sparking as if alive with energy, until finally the show was over and the display vanished. Jack noticed his surroundings had shifted from the bright colors of the pod to the dull grays of a hospital room. Rows of beds were situated along two walls and a desk sat at the far end of the room. About twenty beds. No windows in the room. No flowers either, or fruit baskets or visitors for that matter. But the bitter smell of disinfectant and lost hope was abundant.

Other than the overhead vent humming and his sneakers squeaking on the floor, the room gave off no noise. Patients lay in the beds, as still as corpses with tubes sticking out of their arms and mouths. Alive but sedated, giving him a glimpse of what his body looked like from outside of the virtual reality simulation pod.

Heart of a SEAL

Title: Heart of a SEAL
By: Dixie Lee Brown
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Blurb: They’re brothers in arms, Navy SEALS risking their lives for their country . . . and the women they love.

This is Luke Harding’s story.

Six months in a desert hellhole taught Navy SEAL Luke Harding things he never wanted to learn about life and death. Only tender memories of the beautiful brunette he met a few weeks before his deployment helped get him through the torturous days and nights. Back in the States after a perilous rescue, physically and emotionally damaged, Luke’s about to plunge into a new kind of war. In a seemingly bucolic Idaho town, Sally Duncan faces real—and unpredictable—danger.

All Sally ever wanted was a safe place to raise her nine-year-old daughter. Her identity hidden behind a façade of secrets and lies, can she trust Luke—a man she barely knows—with the truth? Even as they give in to long-denied passion, a killer with a personal vendetta is setting an ambush that will leave them praying for a miracle and fighting for the future they may not live to see.

Excerpt: Screaming wasn’t really Sally’s style. The best she could do at the moment was crawl out of the reach of the enraged lunatic and hope he came to his senses.

“Go ahead. Touch her again and see what happens.” The suggestion, coming from the darkness behind Emmett’s vehicle and delivered with steel-edged composure, took her completely by surprise.

Sally swung toward the new player, forgetting Emmett for the moment. The voice was all too familiar, stirring unwelcome memories. Eyes watering from Emmett’s blow, she squinted to see the man standing in the darkness just beyond her yard.

“Luke?” Sally staggered to her feet, clenching her teeth against the sick feeling that swirled in her stomach.

It couldn’t be him. Not the man she’d fallen hard for before he deployed with his SEAL unit over a year ago. Not the man who’d refused to see her when she hurried to the hospital in Bethesda after hearing he’d been rescued from a terrorist prison. Rushing to his side because she’d thought they meant something to each other, she’d quickly learned the truth of the matter. His disregard had let her know, in no uncertain terms, that the feelings had been one-sided. That man had no reason—or right—to show up at her door.

Sally searched the shadows near the street, where the voice had originated. When she finally made out his silhouette, her breath caught in her throat.

Luke didn’t spare her a glance.

“Who the hell are you?” Emmett turned to face him.

“Does it matter?” Luke’s words contained a dangerous warning that Sally had never heard before.

As he stepped from the shadow of the SUV, his military fatigues and the duffel he carried reminded her of the homeless people who’d camped on Elk Creek last fall. A knife in a leather sheath hung at his side. His face was etched with lines of exhaustion, and he might have carried himself stiffly, but otherwise he was the same man she remembered. Light brown hair, longer and a bit more disheveled than the last time she’d seen him, always tempted her to run her fingers through it…even now.

Review: I am going to this book 4.5 stars. It’s a wonderful romantic suspense with the right amount of sexual heat and heart pounding action.

We meet Sally and Luke, both with pasts that are haunting them. Luke had been captured while in Afghanistan and the only thing that kept him alive was the thought of her and her daughter. When he gets back to the U.S. He doesn’t allow her to see him in the hospital and She doesn’t understand why. Ass she’s been hurt by men before and refuses to see him after his discharge. This is hard for her as she does have feelings for him and Trying to fight it is difficult. Especially since her daughter adores him like a father and he has always treated her like a daughter. When he gets the courage to talk to her, he finds her being assaulted by the richest man in town after a horrible date. When he gets a chance to explain why he wouldn’t let her see him. The loss of his pride, the horrible injures, and he nightmares You can feel his desperation and love and admire that he knows his weaknesses.

I enjoyed how strong Sally really is, after she saw the way Jen, her daughter, reacted to him, she allowed him to spend the night. It’s a good thing he does as he rescues him from her house that explodes, and he takes over all protection duty.

He’s good at what he does and he calls in his friends to give him a hand. They concentrated on her father who is a Russian Mob Boss that got out of prison, but that was not the one. During the whole time he makes sure that Jen and Sally have everything they needs. He makes time to hang out and has asked Sally to marry him.

I really do enjoy how all the characters interact with each other. Luke’s friends adore Jen as much as he does and you can really tell the family bonds building. The fact that Luke will do anything for Sally, including losing her life. He feels the same.

And he needs the strength of his friends and family to rescue Sally. A wonderful read that goes by fast. Full of emotions and action. Highly recommended.

Restoring His Howl

Title: Restoring His Howl
By: Megan Slayer
Genre: Contemporary Paranormal LGBT

Blurb: Opposites can attract, but can they make the love last?

Dillon came to the Sanctuary to hide, but also to heal. He’d been abused and needed a safe place to come into his own. He never expected to find a partner, but love came looking for him. Can he accept what he deserves or will he push away a chance at forever because he feels unlovable?

Cinders knows from the moment he sees Dillon that he wants the wolf shifter for his own. But can a jaguar shifter and a wolf shifter really pair up? He doesn’t know, but he’s banking on the attraction to pay off. What he doesn’t expect is how deep Dillon’s scars run. Is he strong enough to see beyond what’s happened to Dillon and help create a future for them together?

Anything’s possible when the jaguar shifter, a former stripper, and the wolf shifter figure out how to restore his howl.

Excerpt: He spotted a black form moving in the grass. He hunched down and studied the animal. A jaguar. He should know the big cat by sight but didn’t know which shifter it was. The more the jaguar moved, the more Dillon watched. He couldn’t help himself. The black feline moved with grace and seemed to be showing off. The jaguar mesmerized Dillon. He’d seen plenty of big cats and knew there were at least two other jaguars on the property. Fifteen lions, four tigers, three jaguars, a bobcat shifter and six humans were currently at the Sanctuary—but he only knew a couple of them.

Something stirred within Dillon. Longing? Desire? A little bit of both? He didn’t think he could be loved because of the damage to his body and soul, but he wanted someone to care for him. To care about him. To see beyond his past and accept him. Was that even possible? Once others learned what he’d done and how often, they’d run the hell away from him and for good reason. He hadn’t been in control of himself, but did that matter? Maybe not, but he wanted a mate, and he had to hope they’d be able to give him a chance.

Mate… He snorted. Another wolf would be the best option, so why was he watching the jaguar? The wolf should be in charge and finding another wolf. Did the wolf crave the jaguar? Maybe. His human side definitely wanted the big cat. Well, no… The human side wanted to meet the human within the jaguar.

Christ. No, he couldn’t meet the shifter. What was he thinking? Not only would he wreck the fantasy, but he’d have to let in the person. Closeness meant the possibility of being hurt or abandoned. Hell, no.

“Aren’t you a pretty boy?”

He froze. He’d forgotten about watching the jaguar the moment he’d gotten wrapped up in his mind. The big cat was nowhere in sight. Shit, shit, shit. He knew the voice, though. Cinders. Of course, the jaguar was the stripper. How had he not figured that out? Because he hadn’t been paying attention. He was now.

Hot Mess A Practical Guide to Getting Organized

Title: Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized
Author: Laurie Palau
Genre: Lifestyle

Most of us have too much stuff and not enough places to put it. Combine that with our hectic modern lives, and you’ve got a recipe for clutter catastrophe. Luckily, help is at hand. Hot Mess: A Practical Guide to Getting Organized can show you how to simplify your life—and get control of your stuff.

In this new guide to streamlining and organizing your belongings, your house, and your life, author and expert Laurie Palau gives you all the strategies you need to clear your clutter once and for all. This comprehensive book offers clever storage ideas and decorating tips, but more importantly, it shows you where your clutter comes from and how to change your approach. This makes it the definitive how-to for dropping all the dead weight that’s been keeping you stressed and anxious. Just follow the hacks, tips, and strategies Palau clearly outlines, and you’ll soon be sipping a vodka martini in your beautifully tidy living room.

Whether you’re naturally neat or a total chaos magnet, this informative and amusing guide takes an approach to organizing that’s as unique as you are. Let this witty little handbook be your new secret weapon in the war on disorder!

EXCERPT: When my older daughter first started school, she would get off the bus, have a snack, and immediately start her homework. That’s what I always did as a kid, and it made sense that she would follow in my footsteps. I never really gave it much thought until my younger daughter started school. She would come off the bus utterly exhausted. It was a struggle to get her to unpack her backpack, let alone start her homework. Some days she would actually fall asleep within minutes of walking in the door. Naturally, I wanted her to get her homework done, not just for her sake, but for mine. I fought with her to sit down and do it immediately. I never took into account she had ADHD and needed to decompress after sitting in school all day. Homework that should have taken 30 minutes was taking upward of two hours.

After months of battles and tears (hers, not mine – I preferred wine), I finally had my light bulb moment: I realized she goes into a valley in the afternoon. I never factored in her peak productivity time, only mine. I discovered that if I gave her time to chill out and relax for an hour first, she would come back more focused and less combative.

We all know when we are at our best, and when we are basically just going through the motions. Decluttering and organizing take both mental and physical strength, so being cognizant of your peak productivity time (and that of those around you) is an important part of the process.

Review by Emily: I am giving this book five (5) stars for a few reasons. First, I love how short and concise the chapters are. This gives me a great sense of accomplishment each time I finish a chapter, which is critical because I have a busy schedule. The second reason I gave Hot Mess five stars is because of the book’s overall organization. It’s very easy to follow even if I pick it up after a couple days of being away. Third, the author gives “true stories”, which are anecdotes that supplement the text. These are always timely and enjoyable. Lastly, I am giving this organizational tome a perfect score because all the tips are helpful. I hope you find this book as fun and timely as I did.
