July 2019 Newsletter Sneak Peek: Insubordinate Claus

When my guide dog, Claus, was a puppy, he dove off a dock to “save” another dog. Now that he’s an “old” man of three, he sees water as his enemy, something to be conquered, but not leapt into lightly. Where I live right now, there is a swimming pool. I’m learning how to swim…and Claus is hesitantly putting his front paws in the water. Even when the black Lab we live with gets on the top step and splashes around, Claus can hardly bring himself to put in all four feet.

His favorite part of the pool is running around its edge and chasing his black Lab friend. Oh, and watching me attempt to swim and then licking my face enthusiastically. It’s like he’s saying, “Good job! Keep going!” He’s such an encouraging soul.

What follows is an excerpt from the first book in my new series, Lady Trouble 1: Technical Difficulties. This is my first m2f novella. I hope you like it!

Chapter One

The dragon had been brutalized. As Medical Technician Johnson worked over the corpse, she couldn’t miss the signs. The poor dragon-in-human-guise was female. She hadn’t been raped; at least there were no signs of trauma to the uterus, nor fluids. But she’d been ripped apart, flesh from bone. There were tears in the muscle that bespoke deep and terrible injuries.
Sonya Johnson whispered, “I think you were dead when most of these were inflicted.” She’d quickly discovered the cause of death: a crushed skull that had occurred while the dragon was in human form. Now all she wanted was to be done chronicling the post mortem atrocities and see to it that the poor soul had a decent burial.
Sonya smiled just a little. Thinking of any dragon as a “poor soul” was a little like calling a lion a kitty cat. Dragons, like werewolves, she thought with a shudder, were known for taking care of themselves. Both Apex predators of the magical world, for slightly different reasons, they were treated with respect and almost obsessive politeness by other magical beings and the few humans unlucky enough to know about their existence.
“Humans like me.” Her smile was gone as she finished cataloging the last injury. Shaking her head, Sonya covered the body with a sheet and left the autopsy room. She locked the door before heading into her office.
All right, so it wasn’t technically “her” office any more than the autopsy room belonged to her. But she thought of both as her property because she spent more time in them than anyone else. That was thanks to the doctoral-level degree she was seeking from SearchLight Academy in Reptilian Magical Creatures: Treatment and Dissection. Unlike those who studied humans, magical creature experts were expected to have a wider knowledge base. The closest comparison Sonya could make was a general practice physician. And even they weren’t responsible for both the living and the dead.
She had just finished her second year of postgraduate work. It was May. She had a blissful ten weeks off for the summer. Of course, she was still expected to work on her dissertation, so “rest” wasn’t in her vocabulary. But she wouldn’t be attending biweekly meetings with this or that professor to discuss her research. She might even have considered a week away from the City of Tampa, where she worked, and its lesser cousin, the City of St. Petersburg, where she lived. But she hadn’t scheduled any time off because she’d been too fixated on her dissertation to think beyond the next few days.
Someone knocked on the office door. Not closed completely and made of a light pressboard, the door opened a little more.
Sonya caught sight of a skirt in a bold print and a tapered shoe. She called, “Come in.”
A woman stepped in. But then she spoke. “Sorry to disturb you.” And Sonya’s mind went sideways. Not because there was anything particularly wrong with the voice. It was just that she wasn’t used to hearing a slightly male voice coming out of a woman’s body.
Transgender. That’s what they call themselves. And, on the heels of that, I hate it when someone says “they” about my people so I will not start out by thinking of this person as a part of “they.” She’s dressed as a woman. I’ll call her “her.”
“Um,” she said uncomfortably, “you’re not. Please sit down.”
The transgender person… The woman, Sonya scolded herself…didn’t sit. Neither did she shut the door. “Thanks, but…” She looked briefly discomfited. “I’m Agent Brown. Maxine.”
$That surely wasn’t the name you were born with. Oh, shut the fuck up! She doesn’t want you staring, and you will get over yourself.
Sonya realized Maxine was waiting for a response. Her small, delicate and frankly slightly attractive nose was turning slightly red, just like Sonya’s did when she was embarrassed. “I’m sorry,” she said, rising and extending her hand. “I’m Sonya Johnson, one of the medical techs.”
The moment their hands touched, the hair on the back of Sonya’s neck stood up. She pulled back rather quickly. “Um…um…” She looked away from the hand she’d shaken and into eyes that were startling in their beauty. Honey-brown and shadowed by lashes as thick and long as any ever seen in a boys’ band, they took Sonya’s breath away. She forgot for a moment that her neck was prickling and smiled. “How may I help you?”
Maxine, who had taken a step forward to grip Sonya’s hand, retreated at least that far. “Agent Wellington wants to see you when it’s convenient.” She hesitated before adding, “He’s the head of Werewolf Watch.”
Sonya shivered. She couldn’t help herself. She hated werewolves. They were the craziest, most terrifying— $Oh, get ahold of yourself. If you’re being called, you specifically… She met Maxine’s eyes. “You $are looking for me specifically, right? Because Jenny Davis could—”
“I’m sorry. He wants you personally.” She really did look empathetic. “If it helps, it will just be him, you, and me in a large conference room.”
Sonya’s particular skills were needed. She specialized in dragons and basilisks. What could she possibly do for a werewolf? Because Wellington had to be a werewolf. Unlike in the Department of Dragons, with which Sonya worked on a regular basis, Werewolf Watch was stuffed to capacity with its namesakes.
$Shit. That probably means this woman is a werewolf. She looked directly into Maxine’s eyes, needing to know. “You’re a werewolf too?”
Maxine nodded. “Agent Wellington said to tell you he understands your circumstances, whatever those are, and that he wouldn’t call for you unless it was absolutely necessary.”
$Whatever those are. She doesn’t know. Sonya felt a little better. “Can he give me fifteen minutes to…to…” She glanced down at her report. $To finish my work flashed across her mind, but it would take at least two hours to do that.
“I’ll tell him you’ll be up in thirty,” Maxine said gently. Still a little more comforted, Sonya said, “Thank you. I’ll be up soon.”
Maxine left, closing the door behind her.
$Black, like me. But transgender and werewolf. The three modifiers to the name Agent Maxine Brown hit one right after the other. Sonya sank into her chair and covered her face with her hands. If she was going to have a prayer of working with werewolves…
Her mind insisted on calling them monsters.
If she was going to have any hope in Hell of working with those…people…she needed to calm down. So, instead of focusing on her report, she began the deep breathing exercises a SearchLight therapist had taught her shortly after a werewolf nearly ripped her arm off.

Sweet Sacrifice

Title: Sweet Sacrifice
Author: L.D. Rose
Genre: Fantasyy/ Paranormal

Blurb: Former navy SEAL Sebastian “Bash” Lockard died in Afghanistan after leaping on a grenade to save his comrades. Little did he know his act of heroism would grant him a ticket into Heaven’s elite army as one of the few and powerful Archangels. Struggling with his new existence, Bash still retains his human memories, leaving behind a wife he loves with all of his heart. Although he’s forbidden to see her, he can’t resist her lure, or the mortal desires he harbors for her.

As a young widow and nurse, Irene Lockard still mourns her husband two years after his untimely death. His absence is everywhere, and when her best friend weds, she hits an emotional rock bottom. As if summoned from the skies above, Sebastian appears before her, and they share an unforgettable night. But when he once again vanishes, she wonders if she’s truly gone mad with grief.

The only way Sebastian can remain with Irene is if he makes the ultimate sacrifice. But will she overcome her fear of losing him again to another war?

Sexy young couple kissing and playing in bed.

Excerpt: Bash’s gaze caught on a couple on the dance floor, the sight of her sinking into him like hooks and bringing him to a standstill.

With her dark curls springing over her shoulders, she spun across the hardwood, her pale gray dress flowing around her. Much like in his recent vision of her, she tipped her head back and laughed, beautiful, stunning, her smile as bright as the yellow calla lilies tucked in her hair. She swayed with a man in dress whites, a Marine, another fucking soldier she didn’t belong with. And as the rain of realization became a downpour of comprehension, he remembered the engagement, where Claude proposed to Lucille—at their wedding—right before Bash left for another tour of Afghanistan.

“Bash?” Gabriel stepped in front of him, blocking his view, pale eyes narrowed.

Bash’s hand slammed into Gabriel’s chest, pushing him away as he lurched forward. Gabriel reacted faster, though, snatching his arm and wrenching him back at least four feet. Bash lunged again and the Arc’s hand fisted in his white button-down shirt.

“Don’t,” Gabriel growled, all humor draining from his angular face and setting his expression in stone. “Do not.”

Bash’s heart punched at the angel’s fist, every fiber of his being burning with the urge to run to her, to wrap his arms around her and feel her body against his one more time. Envy, rage, longing, and sadness blasted through him in a toxic tornado of emotion ready to whip this place into oblivion.

He nearly ground his molars into pulp. “Let. Me. Go.”

“You are dead, Sebastian. You’re no longer part of this world. All you’ll do is bring her pain, bring yourself pain. Don’t do this.” Twin streams of air whistled from the Arc’s nostrils as he shook his head. “I should’ve never brought you here.”

Bring him pain? More pain than he’d already endured? No.

No.

Review by Amber: I am going to give this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is another wonderful book in the Soulmate Tree series, where the tree actually takes more of an active role in the plot.
WE get to meet Sebastian, who was recently raised up from Purgatory and is having a hard time adapting to becoming and Arc Angel. He is paired with the Arc Angel Gabriel, while he is in training. He feels like a failure when he is hunting for daemons, since the particular demon he is hunting keeps eluding him.
The author does a great job of showing his frustration, his feeling of worthlessness, and his awe and confusion he feels around Michael. Things get worse for him when he is forced to go to a wedding with Gabriel to get his mind off his recent failure and sees his wife.

There is no way he can stay away from her, and violates one of the biggest rules of angels, don’t reconnect with your past. His wife Irene has been suffering ever since her husband was killed in the war. When she sees Sebastian at the hotel she is staying at, where he caught her after she threw herself of the balcony of the hotel, she believes she is having a psychotic break. The love between these two people is strong enough to conquer even death.

Sebastian finds that he cannot just leave her after one night, although that does put her at risk from the demons and other nasties that he is fighting. This is brought to reality when the demon that he was hunting takes on her shape and he finds himself unable to kill it.

When he is going to be honored by becoming a full Arc Angel, he is thrown into turmoil. He will have no freedom and will constantly be fighting. When he is caught with his wife, he is brought before the angels for judgement. Irene does not expect him back, and the soulmate tree appears bidding her to climb. She tries to throw herself into the river from the branches but finds herself back in bed. When her husband appears and both are drowning, the tree offers a root to help them up.

One of my favorite moments is when he kneels in front of her at the ocean and tells her that he would love over everything. If he had a choice he would stay with her forever.

What I found a little difficult is the fact she believed it was her husband almost right away. But other than that, it was a great read with deep emotions flowing through it. Friendships, romance, confusion, and duty before love.

Par For Cinderella

Title: Par for Cinderella
Author: Petie McCarty
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:
Billionaire Aidan Cross longs to escape his life of celebrity and become a regular guy, if only for a brief time. His chance comes when his yacht breaks down near quaint Cypress Key, Florida—the site of his planned five-star golf resort. The golf resort no one in town wants.

Casey Stuart has given up her dream of escaping to the big city. She refuses to desert her uncle, even when he hires the new stranger in town to replace her at their golf course. Casey vows to steer clear of the stranger called Aidan and the danger their inescapable chemistry provokes. Aidan’s stay is temporary, and falling for him promises only heartbreak.

When Casey discovers Cypress Key’s mayor is making underhanded business deals, she ends up on the wrong side of the powerful autocrat. Aidan steps in to rescue her, but secrets from his past threaten to bogey their new-found relationship.

Excerpt: Aidan hurriedly finished his sandwich and chips, anxious to get back to the clinic to check on Casey, Frank’s warning notwithstanding.

Frank got the message. They swiftly locked up, climbed into the truck, and hustled back to the clinic. Oddly, the back of Aidan’s neck prickled like it always did when danger lurked nearby. He glanced over at Frank, but the man just looked grim again, seemingly as anxious to get back to Casey as Aidan was. He tossed off the weird prickling sensation as leftover adrenaline and nerves. Until he and Frank stepped into the clinic.

A barrel-chested, gray-haired law officer stood in the middle of the waiting room. The embroidered stitching over his pocket read, Sheriff Sam Watson. “You Aidan?” he asked.

He nodded, the neck-prickling expanded to full danger mode.

“What’s your last name?”

“Why?”

“I need to see some identification.”

“Why?” Aidan asked again.

He probably wouldn’t have been difficult if he didn’t have a crack team of lawyers in his back pocket, which was all his back pocket held at the moment since he’d gone and left his ID and wallet on the yacht.

“Because I asked,” Watson snarled.

Aidan didn’t care for the belligerent attitude. “It’s Doe,” he said, just to be stubborn.

The sheriff glowered. “Aidan . . . Doe, you’re under arrest for assault.”

Watson handcuffed him, read him his rights, and then marched him straight out the door to the waiting cruiser.

Aidan didn’t know which felt worse. Being arrested for the first time in his life or the look of anger and betrayal on Frank’s face.

Review by Emily: This is an awesome book, full of action and passion and so much romantic tension. I loved it. Five stars!

If you like golf, or even if you don’t, this is a great book that brings tension to a normally (to me) boring game. And it does it in a way that makes the reader feel like golf games are the place to be. The two main characters, and all the rest, are believable and three-dimensional.

Taken by the Beast

Romance cover art
Title: TAKEN BY THE BEAST
Author: Anya Summers

GENRE: Erotic Paranormal Romance

BLURB:

Gemma’s life was nearly perfect. She’s just graduated from college and is heading off to graduate school in the fall. She and her best friends are taking a trip she’s always dreamed about. Only, nothing goes as planned. After being chased on the streets of Dublin by a freaking monster, they get sucked into a portal and wind up on another world. As in, not Earth. Now she can’t find her friends, but there is this really hot, naked guy who calls himself a king and is offering her aid.

There’s only one teensy little problem: He says she’s his mate and is planning on keeping her—forever. Oh, and there’s one more thing: He’s a beast most of the time. And Gemma has to decide if she’s willing to give up everything for the one man she’s meant to be with in the universe.

Excerpt: Moira’s scream joined Anna’s. It wasn’t a hallucination. It was a fucking monster, its wingspan wider than the street as it hovered above their heads. Great charcoal leathery wings flapped, generating enough wind to power a turbine. Its body was large, at least seven feet tall, its chest wider than a doorframe and completely bare. Its arms were muscular and thickly formed; she could imagine the thing benching tractor trailers as if they were toy cars. Its legs were hewn like tree trunks and covered by some sort of black material. But it was its hands that drew her attention. They were huge and tipped with claws. Its face appeared hard as granite, with two black horns curling at its temples. The thing’s eyes flashed with an inhuman silver.

It wasn’t human.

Well, duh? Score one point for the scientist.

It took every ounce of self-preservation inside Gemma not to upchuck. The Guinness still swimming in her veins, which had been warming her from the inside out, turned to frost. She shook. Fear unlike anything she had ever known settled over her. What the fuck was this thing? Why was it hovering over their heads?

“Run,” Gemma cried. She grabbed Moira’s and Anna’s hands when they didn’t move, too frightened by what they saw. Not that she blamed them. Gemma was terrified. Wanted to pee in her pants, she was so scared. But her survival instinct kicked into overdrive.

Perhaps it was the fact that Gemma had always been on her own. As an orphan, she’d had to rely on herself for the first half of her life. If Anna’s parents hadn’t fostered her and brought her into their home her freshman year of high school, she wouldn’t have known what a real family was supposed to be like.

She gripped her friends’ hands, tugging them with her. Their cries shuddered on weak gasps as they followed. Gemma took the right turn Anna had suggested moments before, hoping it would lead them in the direction of their hotel and safety.

Panic gripped her. The street they’d taken, that she had dragged her best friends down, wasn’t an escape. It was a trap.

Priscilla Widows of WIldcat Ridge

Priscilla, Widows of WIldcat Ridge Series, Book One
Author: Charlene Raddon
GENRE: Historical Romance (Western)

BLURB:

After losing her father and husband in a mine disaster, Priscilla Heartsel faces poverty and eviction from her home by a heartless mine owner. Tricked into a bank robbery gone wrong, Braxton Gamble finds himself shot and unconscious in Priscilla’s bed. Can they survive long enough to find a love more precious than gold?

Excerpt:
After the disaster, the women had acquired a school bell which they mounted on a pole in the center of town by the jail, with a long rope hanging down so anyone could ring out a warning if trouble showed up, like outlaws or Indians. But the bell was too far away, and her problem less serious than outlaws or Utes.

Or was it? She had no idea who might be in her room. The erratic footprints indicated the intruder was ill or injured. How dangerous could an injured man be?

A dash to her father’s room armed her with his army revolver from his desk. Her husband had taught her to shoot. If the intruder intended to ravage her, he would be disappointed. She’d shoot him before she’d allow that.

A cautious peek inside her room showed nothing, only half the space being visible from where she stood. Taking a deep breath, she slipped around the corner, gun held ready.

A strange man lay on her bed, face-down, asleep or unconscious. His boots, coat and shirt lay crumpled on the floor. A gun-belt encircled his hips, the gun beside his hand. Congealed blood pooled beneath him staining her coverlet. He appeared dead.

A scream rose to her throat. She swallowed it. One did not scream indoors.

She picked up his Walker-Colt six-shooter and deposited it in a drawer of the bedside table and slipped her father’s gun into her skirt pocket.

Standing back from the bed, she prodded him with a cold poker from the small stove in her room. “Mister? Can you hear me?”

He didn’t stir.

“Mister?” She stepped closer and poked him again, terrified he would jump up and grab her.

Nothing. Lord have mercy, she had a dead man in her bed!

She returned the poker to its place by the stove. A blanket. Or a sheet. She needed something to cover him with. A summer blanket from the trunk at the foot of her bed would suffice. As she laid it over him, he moaned.

He was alive!

Unconscious, but alive.

Powerful Destiny

Title: Powerful Destiny
By: Tricia McGill
Genre: Historical/reincarnation

Blurb: Can love span time?

It is 850 AD and Norse warrior Rolf lands on the shores of East Anglia determined to take revenge on a Celtic clan. Following a fierce battle, where the Celts are savagely killed, Rolf comes face to face with the daughter of the slain Celtic leader. So, stunned by the beauty, along with the courage of Brigid, he is convinced that his Three Fates of Destiny brought them together. Resolved to make this woman his own, he spares the lives of the captured Celtic women and children and takes them back to his homeland across the ocean.

Strangely drawn to the Norseman who is so sure they are destined to be together, Brigid must fight against succumbing to the wishes of the man who killed her father. Nevertheless, to save her fellow Celtic captives from slavery or worse, Brigid must keep a bargain with the Norse leader—a bargain that will see her tied to him forever.

In present day Cornwall, naturally shy Rolf shares his secluded lighthouse with his wolfhound. An artist, he delights in the rugged scenery and ever-changing weather. While in the nearest bookshop one day, he meets a newcomer to town. Brigid’s unusual personality strikes a chord with him. Not only are both convinced they have met before, but their fascination for Viking and Celtic history forges an unusual bond between them. Outspoken and forthright, Brigid sets out to break down the barrier of reserve and caution Rolf has erected over the years. Is it simply whimsy or can lovers across centuries be reunited?

Excerpt: She made a small sound of derision before muttering, “You have already harmed us by taking away my father and our brothers and kin.” The forlorn note in her voice made him want to console her.
But even if he wanted to, Rolf knew that he must not show this woman tenderness in front of his fighting men. “We are men; it is our way to fight. Your men knew this fact also and fought valiantly. And be warned, my men will take what is rightfully theirs if you do not order your women to come out now. I am sure none wish to die, and you will find that Norsemen are not wicked.” Some were, but he was not about to admit to that. The other Celtic women must take what was their fate and make the best of it.

Review: I am going to give this wonderful novel 4.5 stars out of 5. You are drawn into the wonderful, rich history of the Vikings and Celts. The only issue I had with the book was that it was too short and so the love story was hurried.
I enjoyed the strong character of Brigid, who would have rather fallen upon a sword then be captured by Rolf. Her loyalty is clearly shown when she is given a choice to either become Rolf’s woman or her countrywoman would be allowed to become slaves and no longer under his protection. This meant they could be either ravished or sent out as slaves. She is very much surprised on how much her passion is aroused when they make love.
Rolf is portrayed as a different type of a Viking, he cares for what happens to those that are weaker then him. His fascination and love for Brigid is fated to be. He makes sure that she is comfortable and all her needs are met. What he doesn’t know, even though there was an oracle who predicted something would happen, was a woman who tried to poison Brigid. She thought that if Brigid was out of the way, he would marry her daughter.
T
Hen we are brought to the future to two people who have he same name, and both have a fascination with Viking and Celtic history. When they meet in the book store the author does a great job of showing their attraction to each other and the confusion as to why they should feel like this. Neither one wants to let the other leave their sights, and both feel the pull that is like they knew each other from long ago.
This is full of such romance, loyalty, and history that I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys these topics.

Crimson

Title: Crimson
Author: Tamela Miles

Review by Emily: I am giving this book 4.25 out of five stars. The two main characters and the villain were all believable.

However, I found some of the secondary characters to be lacking motivation. For example, Delilah‘s younger brother is described as a gambler. A compulsive gambler. And yet he gives up his gambling without any qualms or resistance. This seems unbelievable to me.

Also, while the two main characters are believable as I said, they seem to have no life beyond the page. They are not three dimensional. That being said however, if you like fast paced action and a love story that is believable and intense, this is the book for you.
