Havana Blues

Title: Havana Blues
Author: David Pereda
Genre: Historical Coming-of-Age novel

Blurb: The year is 1952 and Ramon Rodriguez’s life as a teenager in fun-loving Havana is filled with typical activities and concerns: girls, education, religion, baseball, parties, and hanging out with friends. The country is enjoying a period of prosperity and happiness–until General Batista stages a coup that topples the government and Ramon’s life is flung into chaos.

In a few short years, the carefree fifties morph into a vicious and repressive dictatorship highlighted by corruption, organized gambling, school closures, student demonstrations, police brutality, and assassinations.

As Ramon experiences the thrills of his first romantic relationship, graduates from school, and struggles to plan for an uncertain future, he is forced to make important decisions that may be dangerous to him, his family, his friends, and his girlfriend – the beautiful Sonia — and could turn deadly.

A car turned the corner with a screeching of tires. With
mechanical harmony, another screeching echoed from the opposite

Siren noises combined to wreck the peacefulness and drown my
father’s voice as two cars skidded face to face in front of my house. I
recognized the blue and white stripes. Car doors opened and
slammed. A stream of policemen armed with rifles and machine guns
crashed through the garden door and spilled over our garden like

My mother shrieked once. My father stood paralyzed.

I stared in growing disbelief at the bulk who loped into the
garden and stopped just outside the bright range of the porch lights.
The clean-shaven face, the brittle smile, were familiar to me. So was
the voice.

‘Buenas noches,’ Santana said. ‘Lovely night, isn’t it?’

Even with a veneer of politeness, Santana’s voice made the hair
in the back of my neck stand on end.

‘What’s the meaning of this?’ my father asked, surprising me.
‘Crashing into our house, as if we were common criminals.’
Santana’s stare was cold. ‘Just doing my duty, Señor Rodriguez.’
He turned to me, smoothing out the front of my dinner jacket
with his hand. ‘You’re very elegant tonight,’ he said. ‘Don’t tell me,
let me guess. You were at the Club Profesionales, weren’t you?’

‘Yes, we were,’ my mother said sharply, ‘and we had to leave
because of some terrorists. Disgusting. And on his graduation dance
night too.’ She glared at Santana.

He gave her a polite smile, more of a smirk, and turned to me.

‘Being in the building as you were, you could have planted that bomb
very easily, couldn’t you?’

‘What? You think I…? No!’

‘No what?’

‘No, I couldn’t.’ My heart pounded in my chest. ‘My mother can
testify to that.’

My mother had turned a chalky white and her lips were open
and round like an O. She seemed at a loss for words.

Widow 1881

Title: Widow 1881
Author: Sara Dahmen
Genre: Women’s Historical Pioneer Fiction

Blurb: Boston widow Jane Weber moves to the Dakota Territories to save her respectability but finds her proper views challenged every step. Rooming with the last Blackfoot Sioux in Flats Junction and navigating a mercurial friendship with the fiercely independent town grocer leaves Jane reeling as she stumbles to understand the town folk and the unwritten rules of the west in 1881. Everyone has a story, including Jane herself and her unpredictable physician employer.

Excerpt: Suppose it is not real. I have not yet felt the quickening. It is early yet – too early to really discuss it. For this employer to know, when my lover had not and my husband could not, feels as if I am exposing my private bedroom to a stranger.

Terror shoots into me. I hadn’t wanted him to find out! Not so soon and not like this! Damn the Widow! I’d asked her not to speak! Now he will send me back home to be a widowed mother alone in the quietness of my parents’ house and the sharp stigma of the loose widow. No one back east will truly believe the child is Henry’s. They might think I went wild in the west.

No one knows me here. There is some safety in it, and I must convince him to let me stay. And I must tell him the same lie. There’s no other way. Everyone here in Flats Junction must think I was as married and settled as I say. And the Doctor too – what would he think having hired such a loose woman? The shame of my brief, quick desire for Theodore, and the self-loathing I carry rises up and tries to choke me. The Doctor walks away from me, fuming and vibrating with anger and I feel I must follow him to hear my fate.

Review by Amber: I am going to give this book 5 stars. It’s a wonderful read and the author draws you back into the 1880’s. The novel shows how hard it is for a woman to be anything but a wife, and how one’s reputation can define them. I love Jane, she is a strong person and faces all her difficulties with courage and guts.

Moving from Boston to the Dakotas is a large change for her, along with the housekeeping job she has applied for and accepted. Jane wanted a change and she got it. The new world she finds herself In has made her find courage and strength she didn’t know she had. Jane is not really been a housekeeper, she has had her own household to take care of but they did have a maid come in once a week to help with the heavier cleaning. Now, she is the one that is expected to clean floors, kill the mice, and do laundry.

Then there is the doctor Pat, a man after my own heart. Kind and generous, he takes an interest in her health right away and when he finds out she’s pregnant he makes sure that he does all the heavy lifting. He was also looking forward to having a child in his house, even if it was not sired by him.

When Jane goes back to Boston, the reader really does get to see the differences between her life as a housekeeper and her life as a cook for a wealthy family. Boston’s manners, and a women’s reputation mean everything. When she is being courted there needed to be a chaperone at all times. There was no touching allowed and certain subjects were not talked about. Back in the Dakotas, courting was more direct. Small touches were allowed along with no chaperones.

I am recommending this book for anyone that is interested in society back in 1881 and how women were treated back then.

Title: The unlikeable Demon Hunter: Crave
Author: Deborah Wilde
Genre: Urban Fantasy

Blurb: What doesn’t kill you…
seriously messes with your love life.
Nava is happily settling into her new relationship and life is all giddy joy and stolen kisses.
Except when it’s assassins. Talk about a mood killer.
She and Rohan are tracking the unlikely partnership between the Brotherhood and a witch who can bind demons, but every new piece of the puzzle is leaving them with more questions than answers.
And someone doesn’t appreciate them getting close to the truth.
Go figure.
On top of that, a demon known only as Candyman has unleashed a drug that’s harming users in extremely disturbing ways.
After a friend of Nava’s is hurt, she vows to take this demon down. But will life as she knows it survive this mission, or will this be the one time she should have looked before she leapt?
Happily-ever-after: barring death, she’s got a real shot at it.

Excerpt: “I love home delivery.” Malik lounged in his doorway, eyeing me the way the wolf must have with the three little pigs. His British accent was pure sin.

“I love your arrogance that you didn’t bother moving after I almost killed you.”

He laughed, flashing straight white teeth against his bronze skin. He was still the only being I’d ever met who could pull off a Caesar cut, and was still the stuff of billionaire romance cover fantasies in his soft gray trousers that were artfully tailored to the hard lines of his body and navy shirt, carelessly folded back at the cuffs. “Oh, petal. I’d say I missed you, but I didn’t. Now, unless you brought the more interesting twin?” He peered into the hallway. “No?”

He shut the door, but I stuffed my foot in to block it. Not like he politely stopped trying to close it. “Ow.” I pushed my shoulder into the door to keep my poor bones from breaking. “If you weren’t wondering why I was here, you wouldn’t have let security buzz me up or let my toes cross the wards I’m sure you’ve got strung across this door.”

“Ten seconds.”

“That’s not–”

“Five, four…”

“Demons are being bound.” I rushed my words as he made a buzzing noise.

Malik yanked me inside by my collar and slammed the door.

I wrenched free.

His penthouse apartment hadn’t changed. Still to-die-for sweeping views of the city, a massive glass wine storage unit in the open concept space, and a loft bedroom. He pointed at one of the leather sofas, custom made to hug the curved walls. “Sit and talk.”

Review by Amber: I am going to give this novel 4.5 stars. I absolutely love all the characters that have been developed. I’m always a sucker for a strong, sarcastic female character and a handsome, strong sidekick. Then there is their friends and brothers.

With a drug going around that is made from magic, both demon and witch, they have their hands full figuring out who is making this new drug and why. On top of that they havej figured out that the Brotherhood, the group they are working for, has been lying to them

The relationship between Nova and Rohan goes through one tempestuous battle after another, and a birthday party of doom.

Each one of the members of their family goes through hard times and betrayal. I absolutely loved all the battle scenes and how quickly I was brought into the story. You feel like you are standing right there with them, feeling their heartache, lust, and hatred. The demons were different from the typical demon, and each character has a different type of ability.

I would highly recommend the series to anyone that enjoys some lovely heat mixed in with their action.

Dark Longing

Title: Dark Longing
Author: Aja James
GENRE: Paranormal, fantasy romance

Blurb: Every story has more than one side, like a crystal that captures and reflects different colors of light. Do not take for granted what you think you know… for until you hold the entire jewel in your palm, the temptation is to fall prey to illusion and deception.”

This is a story of the Dark Ones…

Inanna: the vampire warrior

Known as the Angel of Death among her Kind, she has lived millennia alone, one of the remaining True Bloods in existence, unconsciously longing for the one male she could never have…

Gabriel: the forbidden human

His soul recognizes hers from the first encounter. With the first touch, he is awakened… Though he does not know it, he has been searching for her across the ages…

But even as they are finally reunited, their love faces seemingly impossible odds. Would history repeat itself or will they break all the rules and chart a new course together?

“Thou shalt be a benevolent ruler of the human race. Thou shalt not forget thy place, nor that of thy weaker subjects. Except through the Blood Contract, with Consent, or through the Deliverance of Justice, the taking of human blood and souls is forbidden.”
—Excerpt from the Dark Laws, verse ten of the Ecliptic Scrolls

Inanna watched the couple through the thin wall of the hospice, seeing clearly every hair, every eye-lash.

For the most part, her unique ability could be likened to infrared vision, but it was much more powerful than that: she could see through walls as if they were entirely transparent, and she could zoom distant objects into focus to the finest detail.

His chin-length hair hid most of his expression, but Inanna understood the exchange between husband and wife as if she’d heard every word. She knew what was being discussed; Olivia had told her late last night after Gabriel had taken Benji home.

Benji. Benjamin.

Inanna’s new son.

Human son.

How did a four-thousand-year-old vampire get into this predicament?

Because she was greedy, that’s how. She’d fallen in love with the little boy and his bouncy, blond curls at first sight. And first sight was before he had any hair, right after he was delivered, in fact, at New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley-Kaminsky Children’s Hospital.

But who was she kidding, Inanna silently chided herself. She wasn’t just in love with the boy.

She was head over heels in lust with the husband.

Gabriel D’Angelo.

Inanna turned away from the hospice room and walked briskly outside toward her sun-proofed gun-metal Lamborghini Aventador. Folding her long limbs into the vehicle, she fired up the ignition and raced out of the hospice parking lot, into the pitch-black night.

She would grant husband and wife one last night together before collecting on Olivia’s Blood-Contract.

And fulfilling her own.

Review by Amber: I am going to give this novel 5 stars. We get to meet Gabriel and Inanna. Inanna knows that Gabriel is hers as soon as she sees him and the blood contract affords her the reason to get to know him better. Gabriel does not know why he reacts so much when he’s around her, and tries to sort things out.
Inanna and the rest of the vampire group are trying to find out who is running underground fight club. There is far too m any deaths, men are found bloodless and this can lead to suspicion to the rest of the city. Gabriel actually enters one of the fight \, as he needs the extra money to pay of his dead wife’s medical bill and take care of his son. He ends up meeting the vampire in charge and is mostly drained of blood. To save her Inundates him a vampire.

What she didn’t know and what Gabriel didn’t know is that he has a pure soul, and she also has a pure soul.

Seeing their relationship develop before your eyes is a steamy and heartfelt affair. Seeing how both of them care about Benji, Gabriel’s son, is very cute.

It’s rather interesting seeing the differences and similarities between how the Pure one’s handle things and the vampires. They are more alike then they thought. One of the major difficulties they both face is the rule that a vampire cannot mate a Pure one. Since Inanna refuses to give him up, they decide to go out on their own.

We also get to meet the characters that were introduced in Pure Healing, as they work together to end the fight club.
This is a great book with a strong plotline, characters that you won’t forget, and a wonderful relationship that all of us wish we could have.

Author Bio and Links Aja has been writing stories since the age of six, and novels since the age of thirteen. While she’d be the first to admit that those early efforts weren’t particularly good, she sure loved putting them down on paper!

The best part of writing, according to Aja, is that it’s completely organic, the way the stories develop. When the inspiration hits, she writes just so she herself can learn where the characters are headed because oftentimes, they take her by surprise! It is her ultimate dream to share her stories with as many readers as she possibly can.

Her other loves include art, cooking, old movies (anything with Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Redford, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Clark Gable, and all the song and dance numbers because she can’t watch them and not be happy!)

She adores taking long walks with her husband and running after her two rambunctious kids. She has traveled extensively (all seven continents except Antarctica) and has a multi-cultural upbringing. She speaks two and a half languages and binge watch TV shows when the mood strikes.

Aja has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Comparative Literature and Economics and two Master’s degrees, one of which is in East Asian Studies.

Realm of the Dragon

Title: Realm of the Dragon
Author: CiCi Cordelia
Genre: Fantasy

Blurb: An ancient legend spanning eras, continents, and worlds. To some, it’s nothing more than a dream. To others, a pretty fairy tale handed down through the generations.

For those in critical need of their own happy ending, a gift.

“I won’t hurt you.” The dragon’s powerful voice held a soothing quality. Then it ruined the moment by leaning down to sniff her. “Mm. You smell like apples and honey.” To her amazement, that long, forked tongue re-emerged and flicked gently along her neck. Its texture felt incongruously like velvet.

Lily managed to bite back a hysterical shriek even as her lower lip trembled. She clamped it between her teeth to steady it, before venturing, “A-Are you going to eat me?”

Every muscle and bone in her body hurt. Her world had upended itself. Beyond exhausted, she longed for this nightmare to end.

If a dragon could frown, then this dragon was definitely frowning. Its fierce expression sent additional shudders through her, and she fully expected those massive jaws to come for her at any moment.

As hard as she struggled for calm, tears leaked from her eyes when he raised long, sharp claws and reached for her. Too frightened to move, she turned her head away. The thrumming of her heart pounded through her entire body as she waited for the sharp talons to slash into her. Instead, the dragon carefully nudged her cheek until she was forced to raise her face and meet its magnetic stare.

“I said I wouldn’t hurt you.” Then slowly and gently the creature unfurled its tail, the very tip pressing against her lower back as if encouraging her to gain her feet, and held her steady until she was standing securely on the ground.

Before Lily had a chance to run, there was a bright flash of light, then a shimmering of brilliant colors. Her jaw slackened at the sight of a man standing before her.

An extremely handsome, naked man.

Review: by Amber I’m going to give this book 4.5 out of five stars. It’s a cute, funny, and fuzzy tale. It’s your typical fantasy with dragons, wizards, and of course the princess.

The only wrench in that formula is that Lilly’s memories have been whiped and she was transported to earth. Everyone assumes she is dead in the Dragon realm.

Meanwhile Lilly is acting human and believes she is a human, the only thing that freaks her out is that she has a stalker, while running into said stalker she is then transported back to the dragon realm.

The Villain is a power crazy dragoness who is in love with Cord and will do anything to get him.
The other one is a complete idiot, the stereotypical arrogant chacter. He believes he’s in charge but it really being lead by the nose. I beliee that the author addeded him for comedy as he bumbles everhy plan.

It’s a good book if you want to withdraw from the world for a while. But if you are looking for something that have a grand plot with well developed villians nd hero’s this in’t the book for you.

First Impressions

Title: First Impressions
Author: Jay Hogan
Genre: M/M Romance

Two years ago I made a mistake, a big one, and then I threw in another couple just for good measure. I screwed up my life big time but I made it through. I was lucky.

Then I was given the opportunity for a fresh start. Two years in Auckland, NZ, ‘The City of Sails’. Away from the LA gossip, a chance to breathe, to get my life back together.
I grabbed it and packed my new set of golden rules with me.

I don’t do relationships.
I don’t do commitment.
I don’t do white picket fences.

And I especially don’t do arrogant, holier-than-thou, smoking hot K9 officers who walk into my ER and rock my world.

The only thing I know for certain about Dr. Michael Oliver is the guy is an arrogant, untrustworthy player, and I’d barely survived the last one of those in my life. Once was more than enough.
The man might be gorgeous but my eleven-year-old daughter takes number one priority and I won’t risk her being hurt, again. I’m a solo dad, a K9 cop and a son to pain in the ass, bigoted parents.

I don’t have time for games.
I don’t have time for taking chances.
I don’t have time for more complications in my life.

And I sure as hell don’t have time for the infuriating Dr. Michael Oliver, however damn sexy he is.

Excerpt: Michael fought the hold, his face slick with tears. “Let go.” But the arms pulled tight.

“Shh, it’s okay,” a soothing voice hummed in his ear. “I’ve got you. Shh.”

His eyes flew open. The voice was familiar, safe. Josh. And with that his body began to relax. The man pressed a long kiss against his neck, his hair and his shoulder, each notching down Michael’s panic a step or two. And with the last kiss, the arms around him loosened just a little. Enough to finally breathe.

“You’re okay, babe. I’ve got you,” the handler whispered.

Michael leaned back into the man and let his heart settle from its sickening gallop. The memories returned. He was in Josh’s house, his bed, his arms and he was okay. He needed to get a grip. Don’t lose it completely in front of the nice man, idiot. It was just a short dip in the crazy pool. Just a reminder but…Damn. Why tonight?

The handler’s fingers trailed across Michael’s belly and hips, releasing the knots of panic. He sucked in some deep breaths and found himself held and rocked, comforted like a child, swaddled as light kisses were pressed on the nape of his neck. God almighty, it felt good. So, he let himself drift, happy in the moment to never leave that cocoon of flesh where everything felt right.

After a time, Josh slowed the rocking and the two men lay quiet. Michael twisted in the man’s arms to face him, kissing him lightly on the lips. Memories drifted of the evening before.

“Thanks,” he whispered against Josh’s mouth, the word failing to convey anywhere near the gratitude he felt for Josh’s silent acceptance of Michael’s crazy.

“Nightmare?” The handler raised a brow

“You get them often?”

“Now and then.” Michael felt the sting of embarrassment flush his cheeks. This wasn’t a conversation he wanted, not now, maybe not ever. And especially not with this man who seemed to slip so easily under and around every wall he’d worked so damned hard to hammer in place. The guy already knew too much.

Pure Healing

Title: Pure Healing
Author: Aja James
Genre: paranormal, fantasy romance

Blurb: Enter the world of Pure Ones, a race of immortal, supernaturally powerful beings who protect humankind, where sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s Eternal Mate leads to a slow, painful deathwithin thirty days.

The Healer of the race, Rain, is the only exception to this rule. To harness and accumulate enough energy to heal severe wounds, especially as the war between her people and the vampire hordes accelerates, she must take a Consort once every ten years and draw strength from his blood and body. But as the war wears on, few Pure-males who are strong enough to serve as her Consort remain. Valerius, Protector of the race, is the strongest candidate.

Despite their instant attraction ten years ago when they first met, Valerius has staunchly avoided applying to be the Healer’s Consort. The brutality and violence he suffered as a Roman sex slave in his human life ate away at his soul, leaving a dark abyss of torment and self-doubt.

Now, as Rain’s strength drains with every healing act, Valerius cannot escape the fact that he may be the only one who can save her, and in so doing, afford his people greater hope for the future as battles intensify.

Will Rain and Valerius find their way to each other as the struggles between good and evil evolve?

Excerpt: “Rain,” he called to her, the first time he’d ever used her name in the ten years of their acquaintance. “Rain!” he could not keep the alarm from his voice as she remained lifeless in his embrace.

He shook her a little, set his face close to hers to detect her breathing. The barest of breath relieved him so much he shuddered from head to toe.

“You little fool!” he cursed her, furious that she’d used what scarce energy she had remaining to heal him. He thrust his wrist against her lips and urged, “Take it. Bite me, damn you!”

Though there was no movement, he felt her stirring, her breath a little stronger against his skin. She opened her mouth and formed words, but they were uttered so softly he could not hear.

He bent closer until their foreheads were touching. “What is it sweetheart? What do you need?”

In a raspy whisper she breathed, “I’ll not take from the body I just healed.”

“Stupid girl,” Valerious berated her, though his deep tone of concern was at odds with his words. “I would have healed eventually on my own. Your energy is wasted on me.” He thrust his wrist against her lips again, forcefully enough to scratch the skin against her canines.

“Now feed,” he commanded in a voice that brooked no argument.

Amazed at her own strength, Rain suddenly pushed back from his embrace and off his lap. She scooted back against the foot of the bed and let her head flop against the bedframe.

“You are not my Consort. This is not the Cycle,” she whispered weakly but resolutely. “I will have no other but my Consort.”

“Then choose me!” Valerius exploded, uncaring of the consequences he’d spent two thousand years avoiding. “It is the least I can do to repay you–”

He broke off at a resounding slap against his cheek. Though lacking in force to bring any pain, the sound it made nevertheless reverberated in the silent room.

Stunned, he could only gape at her.

Review by Amber: I am giving this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars. Each character is developed with a great deal of detail. Each one has a past, and a future. Their pasts are different from others as they have been reborn after they died as a human. For many of them, their past holds heartache and trauma, which of course hang over them now. The concept of Pure ones is a nice diversion from the normal good vampire versus bad vampire. The Zodiac does not look down upon humans, for some humans can become Pure ones after their death.

The novel also shows that there are good vampires and those that have turned bad. The love story is incredibly complicated and erotic at the same time. You can’t help rooting for Rain and Val, although Val’s past was poising the relationship. As he was a sex slave back when he was a child, along with the fact that he was betrayed by his first master who had promised his father that there would be one last fight and then he can retire but instead his father was killed before his eyes, and his mother and sister no long had protection against the ruffians. Val does not like to be touched, in fact a good half of the book deals with Rain slowly breaking through all the boundaries he has put up and helping him get over the horror of his past. Than he falls in love, which is a death sentence, as unless the female is his mate and returns his love, the male will die a painful slow death.

Add on top of the troubles with his relationship, a vampire is threatening their lives and forcibly changing Pure ones into vampires. They need to find out whom this person is and deal with the threat to their queen. In this book we do get to meet the villain but we don’t find out much information about them.

Another great part of the book is the other relationships that are developing in the background. It gets you thin king on what they’re going to be going through. It makes the reader want to tun into the next book.

If you love people with gifts fighting the villains, steamy sex scenes, and tormented pasts I would recommend this book.

Author Bio and Links: Aja has been writing stories since the age of six, and novels since the age of thirteen.

Within that environment there is a thriving economy where everything is for sale: Sex, Armies and Code for hire. Well-known companies buy and sell for governments and NGO’s (non-governmental organizations). They appear as a benign legal boutique companies and consultants, but their true purpose is to be the middlemen/cyber lynchpin for these illicit goods and services.

ISABELLA NUNEZ owns a computer firm in Brooklyn with her lover JACOB COSTA. Excerpt: AUCTIONEER: Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to Sanctuary. The first item up for auction is the latest software from Safe Haven, houdini. As you know, whoever controls the skies can effectively hold a country hostage within its own borders. Houdini accomplishes that goal. Planes go through five phases: The tower gets them to the runway, at that time the plane is visible to those directing the plane at the airport. It’s then handed off to the nearest Terminal Radar Approach Control Facilities or “TRACON” for those of you who are familiar with this process and goes into phase two. In phase two, TRACON can’t see the plane. As the name suggests it’s directing the plane via radar screens. Once the plane gets off the ground and is on the flight path it goes into phase three and handed off to center. The receiving TRACON hands it off to receiving Tower and that is the final phase.

Houdini should be used during phase two or phase four for maximum effect. We’ve arranged a demonstration during phase four so you can see Houdini in action. If you will look at the screens located in the front and the back of the room we’ll begin.

Review by Amber: I am giving this book 4.5 stars. The plot was twisted enough to make several knots and I’m not sure if they all got untangled. You are left hanging in a few areas, maybe there will be a sequel and the rest of it will be cleared up. The characters were very well developed and you felt what the chracters were feeling.

There was action, murder, double crossing, and desperation. Most of the book was about getting the code for the software that can control planes. Another major was the safety of a child that belonged the software engineer.

There were tons of double and triple crossing. Half the time you weren’t sure who was on who’s side. The evil guys arewell developed that you can’t help hating, for they are willing to do anything including abducting a child. Each character had their own agendas and it was every man for themselves. It’s interesting how desperate all the characters are for the code to be able to use the software and failing that, the money that was paid at an action for the software.

If you love plots with a ton of twists, action, and thriller this is a great book for you.

Author Bio and Links: Being a child of divorce, I have experienced both sides of the American Family. I understand there is a loss to the family unit that no longer has a father in it. In the face of that loss, I discovered a woman can rise to the occasion and not replace a man but offer her own strength, moral compass and guidance. In this environment a child can grow up feeling loved, accepted and ultimately successful in life.

Those experiences in my formative years have made me more aware of the women around me and the daily feats of resourcefulness and ingenuity that goes unnoticed and unacknowledged by society. My stories highlight societal issues and the ever-changing challenges women face that I’ve observed during my life.

Three Lessons in Seduction

Just as an aside: I LOVE this cover!

Title: Three Lessons in Seduction
Author: Sofie Darling
Genre: Historical Romance

Blurb: Lord Nicholas Asquith needs his wife. Too bad he broke her heart ten years ago.
Can he resist a second chance at the love he lost?

When Mariana catches the eye of the man at the center of an assassination plot, Nick puts aside their painful past and enlists her to obtain information by any means necessary, even if it means seducing the enemy agent.

Even if the thought makes his blood boil.

Only by keeping his distance from Mariana these last ten years was he able to pretend indifference to her. With every moment spent with her, he feels his tightly held control slipping…

Can she trust the spy who broke her heart?

Mariana spent the last decade forgetting Nick. Now she has the chance to best him at his own game, an opportunity she can’t resist, even as her view of him begins to shift. Increasingly, she wants nothing more than to seduce her own husband . . .

It’s only a matter of time before mad passion ignites, a passion never convincingly extinguished. A passion that insists on surrendering to the yearning of the flesh and, quite possibly, of the heart.

Excerpt: “Do you not understand how difficult it is to find a lady’s maid who speaks English in Paris? She is as rare as a Woolly Mammoth in London.”

“A Woolly Mammoth in London?” he asked with a confounded laugh.

“Given my involvement with The Progressive School for Young Ladies and the Education of Their Minds, I spend a good deal of time perusing London’s museums.”

Nick cocked his head. “I would have thought finding you in a stuffy museum would be as rare as finding a Woolly Mammoth in London.”

“I enjoy it.” She sounded defensive. Drat. “And I happen to know that the Museum of Natural History in Paris has its very own Woolly Mammoth.”

In fact, she was disappointed to have missed it on this trip. But Nick needn’t know that. She’d revealed too much about her life already.

“That’s,” he began, a reflective note in his voice, “new.”

“Actually, they acquired it more than one hundred years ago.”

“I wasn’t speaking of the mammoth.”

Mariana’s traitorous insides went light at his words and at the implication within them. The moment could grow soft, and a sense of ease could steal in, if she allowed it. It was an ease she’d felt the first time they’d locked eyes at a dinner party at Uncle Bertie’s country estate—so very long ago. She’d felt they were two halves of the same whole and had been waiting all their lives to be joined together.

She gave herself a mental shake. Such memories were a trap.

Over the last decade, she’d done quite well forgetting what she liked about her husband. She wouldn’t allow softness to shake her resolve.

This was Nick. He was as soft as a razorblade.

Review: I am going to give this book 4.5 stars. The developing relationship between: Nick and Mariana are the main plot line. I loved how the author showed the slolw progress of the two rebuilding of trust and love. It is sometimes hard not to want to hit Nick over the head as he is fighting each and every step that is taken to make their relationship work.

The one thing that I think should have been added or changed in the book is the whole spy issue. There is no information provided as to why Nick became a spy and when. The fact that Mariana three lessons in seduction is not really needed as the spy from the other side is not really seduceable. It would have been nice if that was explained a little better and why she is such a large piece of the puzzle.

Mariana is an incredible strong character, and this surprises her husband. Her mind has been opened by the school that she started with another woman. A school for women to learn more then the basics. I also enjoyed watching Nick struggle with everything and how much he loves her. The spy lessons that are being provided by Nick are easier for her then Nick expected. He proposed the challenge to get her to go back home. To Nicks amazement she took the challenge by the horns.

The historical period is portrayed perfectly. The reader gets to see and experience what it was like to live back in Victorian age. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance and history.

The Girl in the Gallery

Title: The Girl in the Gallery
Author: Alice Castle
Genre: cozy crime

Blurb: Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Dulwich…

It’s a perfect summer’s morning in the plush south London suburb, and thirty-something Beth Haldane has sneaked off to visit one of her favorite places, the world-famous Picture Gallery.

She’s enjoying a few moments’ respite from juggling her job at prestigious private school Wyatt’s and her role as single mum to little boy Ben, when she stumbles across a shocking new exhibit on display. Before she knows it, she’s in the thick of a fresh, and deeply chilling, investigation.

Who is The Girl in the Gallery? Join Beth in adventure #2 of the London Murder Mystery series as she tries to discover the truth about a secret eating away at the very heart of Dulwich.

As she sped on to the last gallery, containing the current exhibition, Beth automatically stopped for a second opposite one of her favorite still lives – the red, white, and blue bouquet by Jan van Huysum. Eighteenth century flower painters were paid extra for insects, and she loved spotting all the wriggly wildlife. This time, it wasn’t a bug that caught her eye, though. It was something on the very edge of her peripheral vision. Something that jarred, didn’t make sense. Shouldn’t even be there. Shouldn’t even be there. Something that, she realized with dread, was in the mausoleum antechamber. Something that meant, however much she did not want to, she had to turn back and look.

Beth’s heart started to thud. It was a flash of scarlet.

Wasn’t it Constable who’d added red to all his canvases as ‘the salt in the soup’? Well, Beth felt vehemently her life didn’t need even the tiniest jot more seasoning. She could no longer picture the shade crimson lake without shuddering from head to toe, after her ghastly first day at Wyatt’s School.
No, this time, if anything bad was happening, she was not going to stumble across it on her own. Resolutely shutting her eyes, she sidled back past the niche and then ran straight for the ticket desk. She’d get that girl on the desk to come with her, if she had to drag her all the way.

Review by Amber: I am giving this book 4.5 stars. It’s a quick and interesting crime novel that keeps us guessing who committed the crime. Something is going on at the Girl’s College and it’s up to Beth and the Inspector, Henry to figure it out.

Beth loves to go to the picture gallery but what she doesn’t expect or want is to find a young woman barely clinging to life. At first, they were trying to figure out if the victim was trying to commit suicide or if she was deliberately given drugs without her knowledge. Then another victim comes around and both Beth and the Investigator know it’s something more serious.

The novel brought me back to my high school years and how hard it was to try to fit in, how to become your own person. I adore the little romance that is going on between the investigator and Beth. Both feel it but neither one will bring it up Beth because she believes it would be a disgrace to her dead husband and Henry because of the job he does. I love how the upper-class moms are characterized, it is pictured like any of the shows that show how the rich live.

This book keeps you guessing on who is the killer. Several leads are found and none turn out. It’s up to Beth to figure it out, and hope she doesn’t get into more trouble.

The only thing that I didn’t like was how it ended. There were several loose ends that were brought up that didn’t get explained.

So, if you are in the mood for a lighthearted novel I would highly recommend this one
