Black and White

Title: Black and White
Author: Ben Burgess Jr
Genre: Contemporary Fiction

Blurb: When the prestigious law firm of Wayne, Rothstein, and Lincoln catches two major cases—a rape case where a White NBA star allegedly raped a Black stripper, and a murder case where a Black rapper allegedly killed gay couple and two policemen—Bill O’Neil and Ben Turner are tasked to handle these racially charged litigations. The cases hit emotional chords with the two lawyers and force them to reckon with their interracial relationships and families. Will the racial tension of their cases destroy them or make them stronger?

EXCERPT:
Ben
Blessings

We arrived at Becky’s parents’ house. Their butler, Bernard, greeted us at the door and escorted us to the dining room.

“Hey, Dad. Hey, Mom.”

Susan hugged Becky and gave me a light peck on the cheek.

Mr. Preston greeted us with a faux-grin, hugged Becky and grudgingly gave me a weak handshake.

“Glad to see you could make it, Ben,” he said nonchalantly.

“I’m glad I could make it. Mr. Preston, can I talk to you about something later?”

He looked at me skeptically. “Sure thing.”

Becky leaned over and asked me, “What do you have to talk to him about?”

“Nothing. Just man stuff.”

Becky smiled. “You’re up to something.”

I gave her a quick kiss.

We sat down at the table, and as usual, Becky tried to impress her parents by telling them about my accomplishments and successes, but they were unmoved. She told them about my new case and how important it would be for my career.

“Ben has been working so hard at his firm that he was given that case that’s all over the news.”

“What case is that, dear?” Susan asked.

“You know, the one with the rapper that killed the two cops and gay couple. He’s being considered for partnership.”

For once, Mrs. Preston looked impressed by the news. “That’s wonderful!”

Mr. Preston grunted and faced me. “Who else is up for consideration?”

“Bill, another lawyer who has also been winning a lot of cases for the firm,” I said.

“Let me guess: Bill is White.”

“Not that it matters, but yes.”

Mr. Preston sighed. “Of course, you wouldn’t think it matters. Are there any Black partners in your firm?”

“No, but—”

“I’m sure it doesn’t matter how hard Bill works; you’ll end up getting the position over him. That’s how things work nowadays.”

Becky squeezed my hand, attempting to keep me calm while he continued.

“You’ll get it automatically because you’re Black, and the White guy will probably never move up in your firm.” Richard snickered. “The media is always talking about White privilege, but the only privilege I see is with you people.”

I curled my bottom lip to hold my tongue from cursing him out.

He was part of the reason why I worked so hard. He fueled my endless motivation. Every day I busted my ass to show people like him that Black people weren’t just thugs, criminals and drug addicts. I wanted to prove to him and small-minded individuals that my people were sophisticated, intelligent and just as good as his were. Even though I knew he believed his race was superior, I wanted him to see there was no difference or gap between us. I was equally as capable and as smart as anyone in his race.

“You know what your minorities will never understand?” Mr. Preston asked me.

“What would that be, sir?”

“Steven—” Mrs. Preston said.

“No, society coddles minorities too much. He needs to hear this, Susan.” He faced me. “You people always want more and think things should be equal. When does it end? I’m not blind. I know that right now, White people hold the majority of power in this country, but why should we give it up? We built this country—”

“Off the backs of those minorities you’re talking about,” I said.

“Regardless of that, it was White men who built this country, and if minorities had it their way, they’d push White people out of power and make us the minority. While that’s good for you and your people, what about my race? Why would I want to see a shitty world like that?”

“It wouldn’t be a bad world. It would be how races should be treated in this world: equal.”

“Again, you’re still not grasping, how does that benefit me as a White person?”

“You wouldn’t feel good doing what’s right?”

“Please, don’t talk to me about morals,” he said. “You’re getting paid well to represent a murderer, and I’m sure as an attorney you’ve manipulated the law plenty of times to benefit your firm when you knew it wasn’t morally right. The same rules apply to me. I’m not worried about your race or any other minority. I’m concerned about my own benefit.”

He laughed and said, “Frankly, as a White man I don’t give a shit about minorities killing each other. It’s one less mouth on welfare mooching off of my tax dollars.”

Becky rested her hand on my thigh to calm me.

Before things got out of hand, I said, “Let’s just agree to disagree.”

“Ben, that’s the smartest thing you’ve said all night,” he said.

After listening to Mr. Preston talk for a good two hours about how he was so happy to see Obama leave and proud to have a strong, wealthy White man back in the White House again, he finally shut up and asked me to speak with him privately.

“Ben, while the women gossip, let’s go into my study so we can talk man to man.”

I nodded and followed him.

As soon as the door shut, Mr. Preston stopped smiling.

“Have a seat, Ben. We can drop the bullshit now; you know my daughter can’t hear us in here.”

I sat down. Mr. Preston leaned back in his black leather executive chair, lit a cigar and blew the smoke in my direction.

“Now, what do you want?” he asked, and took another long puff on his cigar.

“I won’t beat around the bush. I love Rebecca, and I wanted to ask you for your blessing when I ask her to marry me.”

He laughed at me. “Absolutely not. I’ve entertained this phase she’s going through and put up with your sham of a relationship for years because I love my daughter, but there’s no way in hell I’d allow you to ever marry her. No matter what you do, you’ll never be good enough for my daughter. ”

“Why is that? I’m no slouch. I’ve worked hard all my life, and I’ve always done well…”

“You people are all the same. You might be wrapped in a nicer package, but when it comes down to it, you’re no different from the other Blacks I’ve met.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

He sighed. “I thought you were smarter than that. Do you need me to spell it out for you? OK, here goes: you’ve gone to prestigious schools, so you’re not a complete dummy. You have a decent job and you drive around in a nice car, but nothing will change the fact that you’re Black. It doesn’t matter how many fancy degrees you have or how much money you make; you can’t change that fact. I don’t want my daughter to just do ‘well.’ If she married you, it would be a downgrade.”

“Downgrade? I work just as hard if not harder than you.”

“But you’re still Black.”

“So?” I asked.

“I don’t want people in power to look at my daughter in pity when they know she’s married to you. If you were married, any children you had would be Black, and I don’t want your race ruining my gene pool. I’d rather my daughter be a lesbian than marry a nigger. That might sound harsh to you, but I’m being honest.”

With his last comment, I stood up and headed for the door. My hand on the doorknob, I turned to him and said, “With your blessing or without it, I love Becky, and nothing you say or do will stop me from asking her to marry me.”

“I’ll never let it happen.”

“We’ll just have to see, won’t we?”

The tragedy of it all was that I’d been law-abiding all my life, received a high education, a great career and now I was rising to gain the American dream by being a Black partner in a White-dominated firm, but in the eyes of many ignorant people like Mr. Preston, I would never be more than a nigger.

Review by Amber:
I am giving this book 5 stars. It’s a wonderful get to meet 2 major couples, Ben and Becky and Billy with Ebony. Ben and Billy both work in the same firm and have to solve both their cases and the one that won would be considered for partner. Yet, they expect Ben to lose because they do not want an African American as a partner.

The book really does delve into how hard it is to have an interracial relationship as white people think that dating a black woman is because of the sex. A white man dating a black woman is seen is the women stealing all the good men and leaving the black women with nothing. Becky’s parents are portrayed as the typical white racists and Ben’s parents don’t think Becky is not worthy of him.

Both relationship go through so much and changes both couples for the better. Each one grows into their ‘color’ and nothing can pull them apart. I would recommend this book for everyone, it reads fast and it really is something all should read to open your mind against racism. Read and makes you really think about the relationships between African Americans and white individuals.

Sheik Defense

Title: Sheik Defense
Author: Ryshia Kennie
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Blurb: Tossed overboard, Ava Adams had been left for dead, drifting at sea. But security specialist Faisal Al-Nassar was determined to find her. He owed her father a great debt and had never forgotten the connection he and Ava had once shared. Yet after rescuing Ava he discovered she barely remembered him.

Amnesia had left Ava uncertain of who had tried to kill her. She did know, however, that Faisal was a man she could trust. The sheik’s embrace was familiar and enticing…and possibly even more dangerous. How could she succumb to feelings for her protector when what she didn’t know could get them both killed?

Excerpt:
Ava Adams opened her eyes. Her head ached and something deep inside her hurt. That hurt was overshadowing the thumping that seemed to want to break her skull. Yet it wasn’t pain. Not a physical pain but something more emotional. Fear. Anger. She didn’t know what. Instead, she shivered. She was alone and she wasn’t on the yacht. Where was she?

The yacht was gone. She had no idea what had happened to either it or her father. It had disappeared while she’d slipped out of consciousness. She had no idea how long she’d been unconscious. Nothing held any relevance, not time nor space—nor anything that had happened. All of it was a frightening blur.

The breeze ran light, cool fingers across her damp skin and she shivered. She didn’t know how long she’d been unconscious, all she knew was that she was alone and there was no land in sight. Her head pounded and her vision was blurred. She couldn’t see clearly no matter how hard she tried. She was fighting to remain conscious so that she could make that promised call to get help. Her father was counting on her.

The thought made her prop herself up despite her shaking limbs. She tried not to look at the dark water. There was only a thin layer of rubber and canvas between her and it. She couldn’t think of it any more than she could contemplate the fate of her father. All she knew was that the yacht was gone and with it her father. She didn’t know when it had disappeared or if her father was on board or if he was even alive. She struggled to sit up and the world spun. She took a deep breath and passed out.

The next time she came to, she could see that the sun was higher in the sky. It was behind her and she guessed that she might be heading west. She had no idea what that might mean about where she would end up. Or if she would end up anywhere except maybe at the bottom of the ocean.

Fear threatened to overwhelm her even as her gut knotted along with her fists. Her head spun and she had to fight not to black out again. She needed to think and yet she was fighting not to lose consciousness again. She needed to get help not just for her but for her father. He needed her. He was alone.

That thought collided with another. Was her father alive? She’d heard the gunshot as the life raft had slipped away from the yacht, carried by the ocean current. There had been silence after that as she’d drifted farther away.

The gunshot had echoed long after the actual event. The haunting reminder was like an omen. She could die out here and her father could already be dead. Those scenarios were ones she couldn’t, wouldn’t consider. Not anymore. She refused to think of him as anything but alive—just as she was determined to reach land, one way or another.

She took a deep breath and again she fought to sit up. The life raft rocked, threatening what stability it had as water sloshed in the bottom. She wasn’t sure how it had taken on water unless it had been in those first moments as it had gone from the yacht to sea. The sea had been rough. It hadn’t calmed much since then. It was cloudy and the breeze was picking up, only a bit of sun peeked through the otherwise dreary sky.

She had nothing. She looked down. She was virtually naked. The skimpy sleeping outfit had been a bad choice. Fortunately, her father had thrown his jacket over her. Who would have known that a trip that had begun as a lark would end like this?

It wouldn’t end.

Determination shot through her chilled body. She had too much to do with her life. She had a new career that had yet to begin. Again, she repeated that promise to herself and to her father. They would live. He would live. They had to.

Something cold pressed against her hip. She slipped her hand under the waistband of her panties and pulled out her father’s phone. She’d forgotten it was there.

Her heart stopped. She remembered that he’d handed it to her. It was a miracle that it had not dropped to the bottom of the dinghy, into the water that was gathering there.

She held it, the memory of her father handing it to her clear in her mind.

“Call Faisal.”

She knew, as did her father, that if anyone could help them, it was Faisal. He headed the powerhouse investigative company run by his family, Nassar Security. At least he was in charge. This book would be a great read for those snowy or Rainey day.

The phone slipped in her damp hands

Review by Amber: I am giving this book 4 ½ stars. The plot is well developed with characters everyone can relate to. I loved the characters of Ava and Faisal. Their deep friendship that had first begun in college then abruptly cut off was important to both of them. Her safety and well-being meant everything to him. Ava feels the same way, as she makes a decision that was not bright but she thought she was protecting Faisal.

The Only thing that bothered me was the fact the bad guy gets taken care of t little too easy. Especially since he was shown to be a smart and clever personality.

The Unseducible Earl

Quick update from the author: this novel is romance, medical drama, and Victorian England all rolled into one!

Title: The Unseducible Earl
Author: Sheri Humphreys
Genre: Historical Romance

BLURB:
When an earl who’s given up on love and has settled on an engagement to a darling of society falls for a Crimean War nurse, he must either forsake his love or embroil them all in scandal.

EXCERPT
For a moment, she froze in the doorway. The earl stood at the sideboard dishing up his breakfast. He couldn’t have had any more than a few hours sleep, but he looked as though he felt much more rested than she did.

The country gentleman’s garb he wore this morning suited him. With his mahogany hair combed and his jaw clean-shaven, he seemed younger. Was it possible his posture grew even straighter when she entered?

He greeted her and offered a plate. “You’ve plenty of time before you’ll need to leave for the train. I believe your trunk is being packed now?”

The way he spoke, he might have been assuring a guest he regarded fondly. She almost gave a rueful laugh, but accepted the china and turned to the sideboard, very aware of his tall frame beside her.

She forced her attention to the perfectly prepared selections of food. She wasn’t particularly hungry and took a small portion of egg. After adding a slice of fried bread and asking the footman for coffee, she settled at the table. “I saw Captain Merrick before coming down. There was no one packing when I left my room.”

His plate loaded with what appeared to be a bit of everything, Cheriton sat at the end of the table, in juxtaposition to her. He frowned. “You’ve seen Jamie this morning?”

“Yes, I have.” In unison they picked up their coffee and took long sips. Victoria held the warm bowl of the cup with her fingertips, enjoying the spreading warmth.

She’d probably never see Cheriton again, and she preferred to think of him as a devoted, if injudicious, brother. Failing that, remembering him as an attractive aristocrat would be acceptable. Unfortunately, his ardent defense of his brother had caused her to regard him as a man of determination and steadfastness.

She’d acceded to his demand that she leave, digested her outrage and sorrow, and then been left with an estimation of him that she didn’t understand or want. For some unexplained reason, and despite their discord yesterday, he affected her in ways other men did not.

He made all her senses heighten. Her heart and lungs worked harder, her skin heated, and her body yearned to draw close. He radiated confidence and strength and something intangible that unsettled her and made her aware of his masculine and her feminine differences. His face might be too intense for some, but she found it compelling.

Too True to be Good

Title: Too True to be Good
Author: Mary E. Thompson
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Just a note from Emily Carrington: I *love* this excerpt! I can’t wait to read this book!

BLURB:
His life was good…

Zach Bennett was content to go to work, hang out with his family and friends, and entertain a woman once in a while. As his family found love all around him, he was content to stay single. Unattached. Happy.

Besides, he had enough to worry about with a new chef breathing down his neck for his job.

She faced the truth every day…

Gianna Brooks always wanted to work with people. She saw enough growing up to know kids need all the help they can get. They deserved to be safe. Loved. Happy.

Which is why she’s determined to get her new client into a forever home.

But the truth isn’t always good…

The last thing Zach needs is a little girl showing up on his doorstep claiming she’s his. Her social worker hot on her heels, and demanding a place to stay, definitely doesn’t make it any better. Especially with Gianna’s curvy body and bedroom eyes, and his daughter’s sad sweetness, making him consider keeping both of them.

Gianna knows she should run. Zach knows he should send them away. But neither of them can resist the pull toward the other.

Excerpt:
“We baked cookies today. Want to try one?” Zach asked when Gianna came in the door.
“You made these?” she asked, holding one up.
He nodded, draping an arm around Summer’s shoulders. “We did. It was a lot of fun. Wasn’t it?”
Summer nodded, giggling.
Gianna’s eyes narrowed, zeroing in on Summer. “What’s so funny?”
Summer shook her head, but she was still grinning.
“I think she ate too many cookies,” Zach said with a straight face. “Sugar high.”
“How long ago did you make these?”
“A few hours ago. We wanted to make sure we saved some for you. Try it.”
Zach waited, wondering if Gianna would take the bait. She examined the cookie closely.
“Is that mint?”
Summer burst out laughing and clamped her hand over her mouth. Zach nodded. “We wanted to make something different. It’s mint cream and chocolate cookies. They’re pretty good. I think you’ll like it.”
Gianna shrugged, then popped the whole cookie in her mouth. She chewed, her eyebrows tugging together and her head tilting to the side. Then she rushed to the sink.
“Ack! What happened? Those are not very good. Aren’t you a chef?”
Summer was doubled over laughing. She looked up at Gianna and said, “Those were toothpaste cookies! We got you!”
Gianna’s eyes bugged out. She looked pissed. A slow smile turned her lips up, and Zach knew he was in trouble.
“Oh, payback is going to be so much fun!”

When Mary’s not reading, she’s playing with her two kids or living out her own real life romance novel with her hubby. The Chaos Stories

Title: The Chaos Stories
Author: Charles O’Keefe
Genre: Supernatural/Fantasy/Sci-Fi

Blurb: Here you’ll find nine new short-stories, some which have been from my life, or things that could have happened. One is inspired from the many games of Dungeons and Dragons I’ve played over twenty years while another is from the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. Some are even some from other authors, who kindly contributed to my collection.

As a treat for fans of my series, I have included six deleted chapters, two from each of the three Newfoundland Vampire novels, which have been all cleaned up and have been made better than ever for your reading pleasure.

I have also included not one, but two chapters from the upcoming fourth book in the Newfoundland Vampire series, War of the Fangs. I’ve filled this collection with tales that will make you laugh, or will scare you, and will hopefully make you think a little about the world around us and the people in it.

Review by Amber: I am giving this book 4 and a half stars. This book really does make you think and think hard about the world we are living in and our past. One of my favorite stories feature out current President, altho0ugh he goes by a different name, and how he may have been elected. Another of my favorites is the excepted story’s above about WWII and occultists. There were other stories that make you think of what the future may be and how it may not be what it seems.

The stories of the Newfoundland vampire are wonderful and now make me want to read the stories. You http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/28e4345f2457

Excerpt: “I’m not leaving you behind, no man gets left behind, GET MOVING!” Marlon screamed the last part at the top of his lungs and they bolted forward. It wasn’t easy with all the roots and holes in the ground. Larry fell once as did Marlon, painfully twisting his ankle so that now Larry had to help him but they moved on, spotting one mark on a tree and chalk on another. The mist had started to rise, it was at their ankles now.

“Mar I can’t feel my feet, it feels as if I’m running on blocks of ice. We need to get out!” Marlon looked about frantically, the trees were still thick, he couldn’t see the tall grass from where they had started this morning. Everything felt tight, his chest felt like it was going to explode, his heart felt like it would leap out through his throat at any second. The trees seem to be closing in on them, he felt like he was back in France, just waiting for the first bullet to split the air.

Marlon looked down for a second, legs are numb up to my knees but somehow, I’m moving, I don’t feel the pain in my ankle. “We’ll get out, you are the best woodsman I’ve ever seen. I know you can do it.” Larry nodded and Marlon was glad to see a small smile creep onto one side of his face, he pointed with his right arm to a mark, an arrow pointing to the east, the way they were going. You better be, he thought, I’ll be damned if I die in a forest by some mist, I made it out of the war, I’ll make it out of here!

Author Bio: get to see the characters and get a glimpse into what the series is about. Each one is detailed and draws you into the world he has created. The other authors short stories are also wonderful and blend in well with the other stories of the author. They are all along he same genre and draw you in. It made me want to check each other out and see how wonderful their stories.

Charles O’KCharles O’Keefe lives in the beautiful province of Newfoundland, Canada, with his wife and two felines ‘children,’ Jude and Eleanor. He is a part-owner of a beauty wholesale business. By the time Dr. Dax Hayes returned from an overseas, volunteer medical tour, she thought she was over his deflection and ready to re-immerse herself in the BDSM world she needed and missed so much without his help. One scene proved how wrong she was and after Master Dax’s timely rescue, she agrees to let him tutor her back into the lifestyle. She hadn’t counted on her growing feelings for the strict Dom or his refusal to take her over completely, like she craved.

Dr. Dax Hayes fell for Krista Matthews the minute he looked into her blue eyes and saw the sated, content look she shared with her husband, Dr. Kurt Matthews. He managed to keep his feelings and lust under control until his friend and colleague asked him to join him in gifting Krista with a menage for her birthday. Knowing it was a mistake, but unable to resist, Dax succumbs to the temptation of this one-time scene, never realizing where it would lead. A year later, after sealing his fate with a questionable act, he flees on a guilt trip only to return and discover nothing had changed-he still wanted Krista Matthews with an ache that wouldn’t be assuaged by anyone else.

Unable to resist stepping in when she gets herself in trouble, Dax again gives in to temptation and aids the one woman he can never have back into the lifestyle her submissive nature needed. When a vindictive woman tells Krista the truth, will her feelings be strong enough to forgive him, or did he gamble everything only to lose it all in the end?

DISCLAIMER: This book is intended for adults only. It contains elements of power exchange, BDSM, including explicit sexual scenes and anal play. If any of these offend you, please do not purchase this book.

Excerpt:
“Why didn’t you stop?” Dax growled at the other man, each of them positioned at Krista’s sides and reaching to undo the cuffs.

“I didn’t hear her,” he snapped in defense, his posture as rigid and unapologetic as his icy tone. “She should’ve spoken up louder.”

Dax snapped his mouth shut and turned his attention to Krista’s shaken, perspiration damp body as she collapsed into his arms. Regardless of the less than favorable circumstances and his guilt, it felt damn good to feel the press of her soft, lush curves again. Lust joined his rage, the two volatile emotions a bad combination when they revolved around her. Wrapping one arm around her slender shoulders, he allowed her to bury her face in his shoulder for now as he reached for the clothes the Dom handed out.

“My apologies.”

Nodding, Dax watched the man stalk off without a backward glance and gritted his teeth against the urge to snap at him again. His indifference to Krista’s struggles proved what an asinine Dom he was, but nothing else. He sure as hell didn’t intend to call him back to fulfill his duties and take care of his sub. That job just landed in his arms, and he wouldn’t turn away from it this time like he had after Kurt’s death. Temporarily, for good or bad, she’d just become his to see to, at least for now.

“Get dressed. We’re leaving.”

Las Vegas Tales Amber Malloy

Las Vegas Tales by Amber Malloy

BLURBs and Review:

Even love takes a vacation in Sin City every once in a while.

Four brown beauties tumble head first in love in the last place on earth anyone would look for it… Las Vegas!

The Guardian (story 1): Jack Stone has inherited his family’s casino. The only problem? The mob wants it more than he does. If he doesn’t play his cards right, he’ll end up dead. When his high school sweetheart drops back into his life, Jake’s got an even tougher decision — should he trust the beauty with his life and heart — again?

I gave this story a 3.0 because while it says what it’s about in the blurb, there was very little about the external conflict in the actual story. The emotional struggle between Jack and his lady love is well-explored, but from the vague reasons for shooting a call girl to how, exactly, Jack’s lawyer gets involved, there is little explanation for why either character does anything beyond their budding relationship. That being said, Jack’s genuine heartache is well developed and his stepping in at the last minute is wonderfully clear and touching.

High Art (story 2): A brilliant painter, Bebe Noel has the goods to make it to the top… just not the social skills. With her financial situation in limbo, she must turn to her deceased benefactor’s husband for help. Will this new arrangement become lucrative for the both of them or fizzle out before it can even get started?

I’’m giving this story a 5.0. From Bebe’s awkwardness (well-developed and touching) to the deal she strikes with her dying friend, Louise, this story is amazing. I loved it so much that I wish it had been the first one in the book. It’s a classic HFN (Happily For Now), not giving away the final ending for the couple but leaving a glimmer of a promise for a loving and glorious future.

Beauty and the Boxer (story 3): Middleweight boxer Cristiano Díaz is in trouble. Unless he can score a quickie marriage he will be deported. He has his eye on a sexy baker, and she’s the only one he wants. Can the boxer convince the curvy vixen to marry him, or will he get knocked out before the first round?

I’m giving this story a 4.75. The single thing that mars it is the lack of transitions. Sometimes it was hard to figure out when/where the characters were, especially toward the end. That being said, the rest of this story, including the characters’ motivations and obvious chemistry, was spellbinding.

Run, Pussycat, Run (story 4): Sullivan McNeill comes to Vegas to snatch lounge singer Kitty Carmichael, the love of his life, away from the bright lights of Sin City. When he finds out she’s trapped in a contract with the devil, he has to figure out a way to save her or lose the woman who holds his heart forever.

I’m giving this story a 4.75, again for lack of transitions especially toward the end. I also thought it was strange that the climax in action takes place in an epilogue, which is usually the place reserved for happily-ever-after cuddling. But the rest of the tale is riveting. I love the development of both characters and the imperfection of the hero that actually turns out to save their lives.

Excerpt:
Lena Mercier walked upstream of the thin dancers. Toned with curves in all the right places, she was an artistic statue painted in the vibrant hue of milk chocolate.

“Thanks for the drinks!” The showgirls headed out of the bar doors in a peal of giggles.

“You’ve got something of mine, Jack,” Lena said in a subtle tone that stopped the mindless chatter in his head. The Lululemon leggings cupped her perfect ass. It was her usual travel uniform. She must have just gotten off a plane. A fancy tank top and light leather jacket topped off her outfit. Her sleek black hair fell in a swoop in front of her right eye — a sophisticated cut that showcased her elegant neck. Jack noted how perfect she looked. Except for the fact she had left town two weeks ago, and he had no idea where she had gone. It still aggravated him.

He wiped down the deep wood and concentrated on the high polish, instead of the sexy woman in front of him. “Just put your lips together and blow.”

She gave him a cheeky smile before she put her fingers to her mouth and ripped a high-C whistle. In a matter of moments, the heavy panting of excitement filled the damn near empty bar. A squat, furry toad ran at full tilt in her direction. Lena’s Frenchie, Harry, hopped on the chair, then the table before he took full flight through the air. Lena caught the little fucker in the crook of her arm.

Since he never tired of that circus trick, Jack chuckled. “Nightcap?” Happy to see his neighbor had made it back home, he tried not to compete for her attention with the dog.

“Sorry, Jack, I’m beat.”

“You want to talk about it? After all, bartenders are great listeners.” He nudged to get her to open up about her work. Once high school sweethearts, they’d spent more than a decade apart, and then one day she was back. Since he didn’t believe in coincidence, he had his suspicions why Lena had suddenly showed up in his life.

“If only that were true.” Lena smiled before she headed toward the door.

“We’re not good listeners?” He wished she would stay and keep him company.

“No,” she turned around, stopping short of disappearing into the cool night, “the part where you’re just the bartender.”

The Boyfriend Swap Meredith Schorr

Title: The Boyfriend Swap
Author: Meredith Schorr
Genre: Romantic Comedy

BLURB:

Is Christmas really the most wonderful time of the year? New Yorkers Robyn Lane and Sidney Bellows aren’t so sure. Robyn has always dated struggling creative types. For once, her parents would love her to bring someone with health insurance and a 401(k) to their Chrismukkah celebration. Her actor boyfriend doesn’t qualify. While across town, Sidney’s professional life already belongs to her parents. She’s an attorney at her father’s law firm and she works tirelessly to keep her love life private. If she brings her lawyer boyfriend to their annual Christmas extravaganza, her parents will have the wedding planned by New Year’s Eve.

A mutual friend playfully suggests they trade boyfriends for the holidays. The women share a laugh, but after copious amounts of wine, decide The Boyfriend Swap could be the perfect solution. This way, Robyn can show off her stable attorney boyfriend and Sidney’s high-society family will take no interest in her flaky actor beau.

It’s a brilliant plan—in theory. In practice—not so much. When Will turns out to be the boy-next-door Robyn crushed on hard throughout her teenage years, and Sidney’s family fawns all over Perry like he’s an Oscar-winner rather than a D-list wannabe, one thing is certain: The Boyfriend Swap might just change their lives forever.

Review: by Emily Carrington
I’m giving this book five (5) stars. I *love* the plot and the twists and turns the book takes as it moves along. The characters are well-developed and original. I think my favorite part is the excerpt below. Please write more soon, Meredith Schorr!
P.S. Sorry for such a short review, but when a book is *that* good, there’s little to say beyond: Go read it1

Excerpt:

“Give the idea a minute to percolate,” Sidney said calmly. Her mouth remained in a straight line, indicating she wasn’t joking.

My stomach quivered with unease, but I took calming breaths to settle down. According to Anne Marie, Sidney was very opinionated and sometimes wouldn’t shut up until she got her way. I’d just let her keep at it until her throat hurt or she passed out from too much wine.

Sidney continued, “If left to our own devices, the holidays are going to blow chunks, but if we pool together, we’ll all be better off. And it’s only for a few days. It’s the perfect solution to our mutual problem.”

I stood from the table and removed a bottle of water from the refrigerator. I poured a glass and placed it in front of her. Hopefully she’d take the hint. The wine was clearly going to her head.

“What do you say?” she asked the minute I sat back down.

The girl had to be on more than fermented grape juice. Hallucinogenics maybe? Whatever influence she was under, she clearly believed her ludicrous plan had merit and I was going to have to put my foot down. “I say that I’m a grown woman and shouldn’t need to lie to my parents about who I’m dating.”

Sidney nodded. “I agree. You shouldn’t.”

A breeze of relief zipped through my core. “Glad we’re on the same page.”

“You shouldn’t have to lie, but in our case, we sort of do. If we want to make it to the New Year without requiring a straitjacket, that is.” She smiled, a slick grin I was certain both assured her clients and put the fear of the devil in her adversaries in equal measure.

A Love Restrained

Title: A Love Restrained
Author: Becky Flade
Genre: Romantic suspense

Excerpt:
Spring in the city brought people out of winter hibernation like a siren song but as the temperature rose, so in turn, did the crime rate. Cops had to be sharp as they walked the streets of Philadelphia. In her ten years on the force, on these streets, she’d seen a lot of crazy and often stupid criminals do a lot of crazy and often stupid things. But to be so brazen, or so plain dumb, as to do a hand-to-hand drug buy right in front of two uniformed officers rode high on her list of top ten. “Tell me you saw that?”

“Saw what?” Hunks of half chewed soft pretzel fell from Sherman’s mouth.

Pete Sherman’s not a bad cop, just not an observant one whose paunch portrayed his love of all things fried and his reupholstered recliner. He hadn’t seen a thing in the last six months. But he took direction well, despite the fact he had seniority.

“There, across the street.” She pointed. “The junkie walking east just scored off the guy in the leather bomber heading west. I swear the dealer looked right at us before the exchange. Call it in, Pete, and grab the junkie. I’m going after the dealer.”

Sherman didn’t argue. She took off into a quick lope, kept her footsteps light so as to not alert the man she pursued. The spring day had drawn people out and the complaints of the pedestrians she weaved through grew loud. The guy glanced over his shoulder, and the edge of his mouth tipped into a grin before he sprinted around the corner.

“Cocky jerk.” She turned the corner, and shouted, “Stop! Police.”

She ran clean and fast, closing the distance between them with little effort. The dealer ducked into an alley she knew to be a dead end. She slowed and put one hand on the butt of her service pistol as she approached. He had his back to her, his hands on his hips as he stared at the brick wall in front of him.

“Philly PD, you’re under arrest. Slowly put your hands above your head and against the wall to your left.” She closed the few feet between them, using her free hand to release the handcuffs from her belt, the other remaining on her weapon. She cuffed him, with practiced efficiency, and then read him his rights before leading him out of the alley, preferring to do the pat down with her partner present.

“Kylee Parker, I’ll admit I daydreamed a time or two about you cuffing me, but it was never in this context.”

Review:

Old secrets, new threats…What are they willing to sacrifice?
Philadelphia police officer Kylee Parker is dedicated to protecting and serving. She sees the work in absolutes: right and wrong, black and white, good guys and bad guys. That is, until she chases a drug dealer into a dead-end alley and finds the bad boy she had a painful crush on throughout her teen years has turned into a more dangerous and more attractive man.

Jayson Donovan knows he doesn’t deserve someone as good as Kylee Parker. As the right hand man to a local drug-pushing mobster, he’s solidly on the wrong side of Kylee’s moral compass. But he can’t help reaching for her time and again when he knows he shouldn’t.
Even when his secrets threaten them both.

I am giving this story 3.5 stars because while I found the plot engaging, the characters were a challenge to get to like.

I wish this story had started halfway through part two and gone to the end. That was he most exciting, nail-biting, and character-centered part of the whole book. We learn more about Kylee’s secret feelings in this, the second half of the story, and more about Jayson’s true motivations, not to mention how they mesh as a not-quite couple.

However, as all stories do, this one begins at the start—and spends numerous pages giving one dimensional motives for the two main characters. I wouldn’t have even minded this so much, would have assumed that they would be explained more as the tale went on, if not for the complete lack of justification for the secondary characters’ actions. I was completely distracted by a long-time abuse victim suddenly turning her life around and the never-explained lying Kylee endured from her supposedly loving parents.

I did enjoy the six-year gap between parts one and two, and the surprise of what happened to both main characters during that time. It was wonderful to find out Jayson’s true reason for being gone for over half a decade, and this is where Kylee’s motivations picked up some depth and wherewithal. Even the assumed main bad guy gains some three-dimensionality. But again, the book falls short when it comes to the real bad guys’ reasons for being the bad guys.

I’m giving this book a three and a half (3.5) star review because if you skip to the middle and read to the end, it’s a fabulous and well-paced read. I’m also giving it that extra half star for the scene I’ve excerpted. If you like passion, read this book. If you like bad boys and kickass cops, definitely read it. I’m looking forward to another book from this author with the desire to give a higher rating.

Entromancy: A Nightpath book

Title: Entromancy: Book One of the Nightpath Trilogy
Author: M.S. Farzan
Genre: Urban Fantasy, Sci-fi

Excerpt:
I fought to stay calm. I could hear my pulse pounding in my ears, matching the drumming in my temple, and I kept forgetting to breathe. I hedged, knowing that I could leave, taking the auric with me for questioning, but I wouldn’t have time to evacuate the people upstairs. I wasn’t familiar with being unsure of my next course of action, and I didn’t care for the feeling.

I had neither the time to give the defuse protocol another tries nor the skillset to hack into the device and do it the hard way. I synced the timer with my digitab and saw the countdown appear in my lenses. Pocketing the digitab, I released my knee from the auric’s throat and grabbed him by the collar.

“What’s the code?” I snarled at him.

“What?” he said thickly. I could see the blood staining his white teeth.

“Don’t play stupid with me,” I said, shaking him. “What’s the code?”

“The hell, man? What code?”

I could see that he had no idea what I was talking about. I glanced back at the bomb and up at the time display. 21:27:24, three minutes and thirty-six seconds.

The auric craned his neck to follow my gaze, then looked at me. I could see understanding register in his eyes.

“We’re dead?” he queried.

I nodded absently, reaching for another ceridium capsule. Prying off a glove with my teeth, I reached out towards the device.

The auric’s hand shot up and grabbed weakly at my wrist. “You’re going to kill us, man!” he protested.

“Probably!” I looked back towards a side entrance next to the counter. “Can you open that?”

He hesitated, then nodded slightly.

“Do it,” I said. He got up slowly and trotted over to the door.

Blurb: 2076 is not a good year to be a special agent. A quarter of the world’s power runs on ceridium, a newly discovered element that has had the unintended consequence of spawning a new race of people, and several forms of magic that were once thought to have been forgotten. Eskander Aradowsi is an agent of NIGHT, a paramilitary force created to contain and control this new perceived threat, but he soon learns that not all within his organization is as it seems. A botched mission turns out to be the least of his troubles, when he unearths a plot that threatens the uneasy truce between the aurics and humans of San Francisco, and centers on a form of magic that toys with the very fabric of the universe: Entromancy.

I’m giving this book four (4) stars. It would have been higher but the beginning of the book was confusing as magic and the new breeds of humans were suddenly shown up and no explanation on what they were and how it works.

But further on in the book things get explained and we learn about the plot of the auric king to take oveerre city and the double crossing of the agency the main character works for.

I love all the characters in the book, they each have their different personalities and back stories. I love the little hint of romance that floats in the plot while everyone get shot at. I really couldn’t put this book down once it got started. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the story, as it promises to be a good one.
